Lifting

I was helping set up folding chairs at a family Christmas party and people were angry that I carried two at a time. I'm only 13 weeks and didn't feel any discomfort at all. How much weight do other moms to be feel comfortable carrying?

  • My 3 1/2 year old son, not sure how much he weighs now. But he's not light.

  • I'd carry two chairs at a time no problem.  It drives me up a wall when people who know I'm PG tell me not to carry that, lift that, stand on that.  I know my body thankyouverymuch!  When I was PG with DD I worked in a day care and I lifted 20lb 2-3yr olds on a daily basis and I used to lift the cots in and out of storage every day for nap time up until I went into labor.  I think it's just what your comfortable doing.  :)

  • I wouldn't worry, I lift DD who is 4 and DS who is 2 on a regular basis.  Just listen to your body, if you start to feel crampy then take a break :)
  • Agree. I lift and carry my kids and DD is probably close to 40lbs. I think if it's something you could easily carry before you're fine.
  • You are pregnant not disabled. If you felt fine and your doctor hasn't given you any restrictions then it shouldn't be a problem. I am a nurse and I am still regularly assisting in moving and lifting patients, some of which are several hundred pounds and dead weight.
  • My doc said I can lift up to 35 pounds. Luckily my oldest weighs just under that.

    If I were you, I would ask my doc, then when people say stuff, you can explain its ok per your doctor.

  • My doc said no more than 50lbs. I work in day care and one of the infants is 22lbs! The rest are all less than that but so far I haven't had a problem lifting him

  • Well I carry my almost 30 lb daughter daily and lift weights in the gym..probably abou 20lbs or so. You won't cause harm by lifting two chairs especially if you felt fine doing it.
  • I lift my daughter all the time, who is probably about 35ish lbs. I also lifted a 50 lb bag of dog food the other day, and I'm fine. I haven't been given a weight restriction.

  • My doctor told me 30 lbs, but it's kind of an arbitrary limit. If you're used to lifting more I doubt it would be a problem. She said it's not going to hurt the baby, it's more about hurting yourself- which is easier to do now due to loosened joints and ligaments and your center of gravity and balance being a little off.

  • My Dr said no more than 20# but I still regularly carry my 2.5 yo and he's over 30#. I've also been weightlifting since September and lift more than that. I asked when I called to set up my 1st appointment if it was OK to keep up what I've been doing and he said it was fine.

  • :/ I wouldn't side eye that at all. My 22m old is 35lbs and I spend the majority of my day carrying him. I'm a nurse and regularly transfer patients who weigh a whole lot more than him. Just the other day I was moving a body to the morgue with another coworker and transferring from her bed to the morgue trolly, she was at least 140lbs so we were each lifting easily 70lbs of dead weight to get her on there.

    I think as long as you're comfortable and not on weight restrictions you're fine.

  • I lift my daughter all the time and she's almost 30 lbs and I weight lift. I lowered the weights I lift but I still do it and my doctor said it was fine but as I get further to be careful.

    Whatever you were comfortable lifting before your pregnancy you should be fine now as long as you aren't pushing too hard.  Two folding chairs is hardly much to worry about.  I usually lift weights and plan to go back to lifting at about 80-90% of what I was before pregnancy when I finally get past morning sickness.  I would go back to the full amount, but it has been weeks since I've lifted and don't want to push too hard.

    That's awesome!  My goal is to eventually have a 200lb deadlift, but I'm a ways away from that.

    This is exactly what I do now, and I agree. Half of my coworkers are like "Don't pick up the kids! Let someone get the cots for you!" I know they are trying to help but I can't always wait around for other people to have time to do things for me. Like PPs have said, just listen to your body. If something feels off, then ask for help. Until then, you're pregnant, not an invalid!

  • My doctor said that with the first pregnancy no pushing, pulling or lifting anything over 20 lbs. Tito be honest - I have been avoiding lifting of any kind.

  • I think it just depends what your body is used to pre-pregnancy. But 2 folding chairs seems like NBD to be.

    I'm a physical therapist and when I was pregnant with DD1 I worked on a hospital unit that frequently had bariatric patients over 500#. I'm positive there were days I was lifting >100lbs helping these people get out of bed. And we were good :)
  • some of my coworkers are like that, and it drives me crazy!  They stop me from lifting instrument trays that are maybe 15 lbs at most, and god forbid i try to help move a patient they FREAK out.  
    I was cleaning up a room before leaving call yesterday, and the guy working the shift ran behind me to take unused trays back to the supply room.  They all say oh no you don't need to be lifting that much!  I'm not broken, just pregnant!  If I wasn't comfortable doing it, I would definitely ask for help.

    Haha, there is this too! Sometimes I do take advantage as well! But most of the time I can get things done faster if I do it myself and when you have 10 or 11 antsy 2 and 3 year olds, time is of the essence!

  • I completely understand, OP! My mom and sister constantly tell me I shouldn't be lifting stuff. I go to the gym and back squat 115-125. My doctor says that whatever your body is used to doing is fine. I seriously don't grasp how people do not get that!

    I attribute my fast and easy labor to all of the "exercise" I got at work every single day!  I worked up until I went into labor and one of my co-workers told me that I made her nervous!  lol

  • If you were lifting 2 folding chairs prior to pregnancy you'll be fine now. I do a lot of strength training & while I'm not training to do max squats or lifts, I'm still doing quite a bit to maintain.

  • My son is just over 50 lbs. He was upset last night so I picked him up to soothe him - it felt fine! I can't stop parenting my kiddo because I'm pregnant :wink:. My doctor said to avoid heavy overhead lifting...
