High-Risk Pregnancy

Consult with High Risk Dr (Losses mentioned)

hello ladies. I'm currently 10w pg and due in July. My OB has referred me for a high risk consult due to a stillbirth in Jan 2014 and my history/age.

I'm just curious to what this involves. More blood? U/s? The unknown scares me and thought you ladies might have some insight prior to my appointment.

TIA!!

I will be seeing a perinatal consultant in addition to my ob due to AMA (I'm 41) and several blood clotting issues with this baby just like I did with my first. They would always do an u/s there to check on the baby and they monitored my medications. On the plus side, you should get to see your Lil one more frequently! Congratulations! I'm 10 weeks and due in July as well :)

  • I am assuming you are over 35 since you mentioned your age? Have you been to the Preg over 35 board? We have had several over the last week or so join...so I cannot recall if you've intro'd or not. But we are a great group of ladies.
But as for HR drs...they are all different. I am considered HR for my GD. And not really my age. And I have noticed since joining the clinic at 24/25 wks they are very lax with me until just recently. They would send in student nurse practitioners who I didn't feel comfortable with. But the last couple of visits I have actually seen a Dr, so that is better. I just haven't been very impressed with them. I had better service with my old reg OB.
But in our group PG over 35...there are some who get multiple u/s. And multiple visits.

  • I saw a high risk doc yesterday. They did an ultrasound and then I met with the doctor. We discussed my concerns and what my condition meant for the baby and I. Then she told me a long list of things she would recommend to my OB as far as tests, labs, follow ups etc. I won't be back to see her for 8 weeks unless something comes up but will continue to follow up with my OB regularly.
  • When i was pregnant i saw a high risk dr for periodic growth scans. It's a good thing because my last growth scan at 35+6 caught that i had developed pre eclampsia. My babywwasn't moving much and there was a lot of focas on her cord. I had an emergency induction which revealed she had IUGR, a satillite placenta (the placenta sectioned off from itself) and her cord was wrapped around her neck twice.

In my case i saw high risk due to crohns disease and i had periodic growth scans to check for her growth. During these scans i also had urine sample checks as well as blood pressure checks.

  • Thanks ladies. I can handle more u/s as my anxiety is through the roof.

  • I'm seeing an MFM exclusively (not even bothering with my OB -- whom I do really like, but just not really needed for this pregnancy, and helps keep things simple) due to the premature delivery of my twins at 29w. Like PPs have said, it usually just amounts to extra monitoring. They're the experts for any HR pregnancies -- for any multitude of reasons, so being referred to them, honestly, isn't a bad thing. If anything, it adds a ton of reassurance that I'm doing everything in my/their power to go as close to term as possible!
