WWYD re: Daycare & picky eating

DD is an extremely picky eater. She's been going to dc for over 2 months now, 3 days/week. She still refuses to eat lunch there. Her teacher suggested that I pack a lunch for her. I want her to eat what the other kids eat and I was hoping that being at daycare would help with her picky eating. It obviously has not. This is a center, not inhome. When she was in home care she'd get meals made specifically for her... She just turned 3 years old. ?WWYD??TIA?

  • Pack the lunch but also ask the center to keep offering her at least some of their lunch, perhaps the more desirable portions and then to keep trying to gradually get her to eat more there.  Plus are there ANY meals there that she will eat?  IOW, will she eat the spaghetti on spaghetti day or just refuse to eat anything from them?

  • In the same boat - my 3 y/o DS gets lunch packed for him every day.  But, just seeing the kids eat things that he's not getting has made him become more interested in some foods.  Make sure they're not giving her too much snack, too.  Our daycare center has been great about figuring DS out - the give him a tiny morning snack (he really doesn't need one at all) and they don't give him his milk until he's started eating his lunch.  It has helped a lot.
  • I have to pack Billy's lunch so not an issue.  He's super picky but tends to eat better at school - peer pressure.  I would just pack her lunch - it's more important that she eats something rather than try new things.

  • I would probably pack a small lunch for her and ask that the teachers also offer her part of the school lunch.  With a smaller packed lunch it's more likely that she'll still be hungry after eating it, so she might be more likely to try what everyone else is eating.  But then if she chooses not to eat any of the school lunch, at least she won't be starving by dinner time.
