Recovering HG?

This is my first and probably last post. Any other ladies that have been suffering with HG or extreme morning sickness noticed any easing up? It sounds silly but my first symptoms were vomiting! I've had nausea since week 4! 2 weeks before I knew I was carrying. I was prescribed Cyclizine and have been rehydrated a few times through IV but I was still vomiting profoundly! Finally after much nagging and several different opinions from doctors they've finally changed my medication and I cannot stop eating! So at 14w 2d I've become ravenous.

To cut a long story short, I lost around 18 pounds in the 10week something days and now I'm worried if I keep eating as I have been; it will be just as detrimental as not eating? (I cannot fill myself!)

Anyone else in my shoes care to share their experiences? I'm intrigued as to what your midwives/OB concerns were about a sudden weight gain since I've seen mine once in 14week and she didn't even give me her phone number? Should I be gradually increasing my food intake or just ram my face full as I have been doing?

Thanks for taking the time to read my rambling! Any input will be of great value :)

Re: Recovering HG?

  • No experience with this but my guess is that your body is making up for lost time.  I think depending on your pre-pregnancy weight, most OB's recommend you gain about 5 pounds in your first tri.  Listen to your body!  Maybe someone who has been on this medication can provide more insight into whether the ravenous feeling is normal.

    Glad you are feeling better!

  • If you're hungry, eat. Just make smart choices. Don't scarf down a bag of potato chips - have some carrots and hummus instead. Eat foods that are high in fiber - you'll feel fuller for longer.

Depending on what your weight and body type were like before you got pregnant, gaining some of the weight back that you initially lost may not be a bad thing. Your doctor will let you know over time whether you are gaining enough or too much weight. You're still early enough in your pregnancy that you don't need to worry about that right now.

  • Thankyou for the feedback! I have an appointment with my midwife in 3 weeks time so I guess I'll find out if making up for lost food time has affected me in anyway :))

I am making good choices with food, I always try to stay as healthy as possible, with the occasional treat of course! For now I guess I'll just enjoy being able to keep food down! As for my body type I'm pretty average, although I would like to shed a few of my extra pounds like most women would :)
  • HG here too, and I say EAT!! Enjoy it!! I'm not quite there yet, but like others have said, don't worry about your weight until your doctor says worry about weight. Until then, try to make good choices, but if your body says it's hungry, it's probably for a reason.
  • Why will this be your last post? Also, what do you mean you didn't get your midwife/OB's phone number? How did you get in touch with her the first time to make the initial appointment? That's the number I would continue to use to contact her.

Like PP's have said, I would eat when you're hungry and try not to focus on the weight gain possibilities, especially if you're already 18 pounds down. I know it's easier said than done, but it's really nothing to worry about this early.

Hope you get to feeling better!

  • I looked on the abbreviation board and couldn't find it, so what does HG mean?? Sorry to ask, not wanting to offend.

Hypermesis Gravidarum. Basically morning sickness on crack. (Aka, hospitalization/puking 10+ times a day, etc.)
