working mum-to-be's :)

Iam now 13wks and 4dys, with my first bubby and I just want to know how other mum-to-be's are finding their normal working routine whilst being pregnant, I work early mornings, 8hrs a day and am finding it difficult to cope some days. Just curious on how you ladies are finding it..

Re: working mum-to-be's :)

  • I'm not working this time round but I was on 8 hr days last time too and it was definitely harder in the first trimester than the second so hopefully it'll get a bit easier!

  • I've found it tough. Some days are 12-13 hours and I've just cut down from 6 days a week to 5. I nap when I can and rest at weekends. I'm exhausted and have taken the odd day off here and there.

I work 7-4 with a 1hr lunch break usually at 10. I work in daycare in an infant room. It's been ok so far aside from occasionally having to call my boss to ask her to cover me so I can take a potty break.
And I've been bringing extra food to snack on throughout the day

I think I'll be ok until later in third Tri when it'll be hard to put the babies into their cribs with my big belly in the way

  • Tbh, I'm not finding any routine very easily :( not that my job has any rhyme or reason anyhow except for office days (which I've been taking a TON of). Kudos to those who do it, but early mornings very very rarely happen for me...so I make my appts later if I need to travel, and focus on sleep and eating to keep nausea at bay.

I did find, that days where I have important meetings (ie I get nervous before hand), I have a harder time sleeping. And thus wake up on my own. If I don't get woken up by an alarm or DH or something, and just awaken naturally, I am usually much less sick! If my alarm goes off, say while dreaming, it's a mad dash to the bathroom. Don't know if that's weird or not...but perhaps try to adjust your schedule to be up even earlier so you naturally awake by go time? If you can still get enough sleep!
  • I work 10 hours a day with a one hour lunch break. But I've been working 9 hours and just eating at my desk. It's been tough and I've definitely missed days at work. I'm slowly feeling better now and able to take on nearly as much as I did before I found out. As far as how I'm coping, not well. I'm tired and cranky and sometimes gaggy. I also have no motivation to get out of bed in the morning.

  • I work 8 to 4:30 with a half hour lunch break and to be honest I have been okay most of the pregnancy. I am 13weeks 6 days and have only gone home early once. I have not had to call off yet. If I do need time off for appointments, it is always approved. My boss is so supportive I am truly blessed. The job in itself is not very stressful either so that helps the most. :-)
  • I work 9 hour days with an hour lunch also, but I have been blessed in only having a few episodes of MS and they were at home. I'm exhausted, but seem to be managing ok by going to sleep extra early and sleeping a TON on the weekends. I have a lot of snacks that I keep at my desk so I don't get too hungry and can keep my energy (what's left of it) up. By the afternoon I have a hard time bc I'm so tired so I'll have a pick me up with a Pepsi or hot tea.

I am worried bc were entering our busy season which last about 8 weeks. The days are nonstop and it's so much stress and brain power- I'm forcing myself to take breaks and my supervisor/team mate is pitching in some.

I also have been trying to do more yoga at night or take baths to keep my stress down.

  • I have two little ones at home and this only gets more tiring! I am a Phys. Ed. Teacher so I haven't gone back to work yet but I'm dreading Monday. I cannot get out of bed and need naps to get through the days. Not sure how I'm ever going to get back into the routine of the school day :(
  • With 2 little ones and working FT I am worn out being non stop throughout the day. I'm having a hard time even concentrating at work because I'm so tired. I am hoping that since I am nearing the end of 1st tri things turn around soon.

  • You described exactly how I feel!! I hate my desk just as is hated it before I got pregnant and it's going to be rough going back after maternity leave!
  • I work 9-10 hour days usually, eating lunch at my desk while I continue to work so that I can leave after 9-10 hours and not stay later. I've really struggled. I've had vacation time the past week and it was much needed. I'm dreading going back tomorrow, I'm just trying to get through each day, praying the second trimester is easier like everyone says.
  • With my first I was teaching high school, so I'd leave the house at 6ish and get home around 330, I had a pretty easy pregnancy so it wasn't too bad. I worked a full day the day DD was born, my water broke after school.
So far with this one I've been working mostly from home but I'll start the 8-5 next week and teaching at a local community college 2 nights a week for the spring semester. I am certain I'll be exhausted with a full time and part time job along with being a single parent to DD and pregnant, but you gotta do what you gotta do!
I plan to stop the part time when LO arrives, grammie has already given me grief about having to watch 2 kids 2 nights a week. I'll be working right up until I pop again though!

  • Nursey nurse here. All my shifts are 12 hours long including night shifts. It's hard I won't lie, but I have a great team with lots of support. Only 5 more months and I'm off. It's doable.
  • Ugh. I usually love my job, but it's 12 hrs a day, with no time for lunch or breaks, and no flexibility for sick days. It's hard to snack or drink water during the day, and there has been a lot of running into another room to puke. It makes me upset that I'm not enjoying my work, and hoping that things will get better soon!
  • I have a relatively flexible job, in that if I come in a little late I can make up the time later in the week as needed, so long as I make it to key events/meetings.  It's gone ok so far, although I did tell my immediate supervisor I was pregnant so she knew why I was coming in late recently.

I also have an office, so I'm taking to shutting the door for a few minutes each day for a little peace and quiet.

My challenge is that things get so busy for me that I will often skip breakfast and/or forget to eat lunch.  I can't do that anymore, so I have to be sure to make time for myself, which has always been hard at work.  But now I have the best reason to make it work, so I will!

  • I work a really stressful office job 8a-6p but often much later. I'm desperate to tell everyone so I can start going easier on myself. But right now it's top secret and I'm working in overdrive. It's awful. I'm not managing emotionally well at all and I feel like I'm short changing the baby because I can't excercise much and am stressed all the time.
  • I'm also 13 wks 4 days. It's a struggle! So hard to get out of bed early, even with a decent amount of sleep. I'm a manager and my tolerance level for BS is at an all time low. I've been trying to take little breaks to walk and get away from people during the day. And I absolutely crash when I get home at night. So tired all of the time! Hoping the 2nd trimester is better. Good luck to all you ladies!
  • It's been completely miserable, all the time.

  • I would do ANYTHING for these short shifts
  • I am a School bus driver i work in 3hour shifts. I do a A.M. run and a P.M. run. But what truly scares me is after the baby is born. Idk how im gonna get up at 5:00am. With a new born baby that doesn't sleep thru the night.
  • I'm struggling tbh. I work 9-10 hrs a day and am reachable 24/7. I've started cutting back on my hours a bit and not responding to non-urgent emails rigt away. Even though my boss knows my situation which includes an underlying chronic medical condition, they have been pretty unsupportive. My doctor has actually suggested STD because they are ignoring the doctors notes being provided and saying that my performance is 'suffering' even though I have always been rated as 'exceeding expectations'.

Sorry, rant over. Hopefully now I'm in my second trimester I'll get some energy back and feel a little better.
  • I feel fortunate that I already left my previous job as a Pastry Chef. I was working 12 hour+ days working in extreme hot and cold conditions, in a very physically demanding, emotionally draining environment, frequently for 10 days straight (with late and early morning shifts) before a day off. I am now working as a Retail Store Manager and while I get plenty of time on my feet, lately it had been slow and I can get lots of sit time at my desk. I also only have to work a guaranteed 8 hours a day on a much better set schedule. There are many things about my job that annoy me, but I try to remember how much worse it would be if I was still in my old job, and it helps me get through the challenging days when nausea and exhaustion are getting to me.
  • Good to know others are in the same boat! I'm required to be @ work 8:30-5:30 but normally go in around 7:30 stay until 6 or later and work through lunch to stay caught up. I'm fine with it now but really stressed about how things will work out after maternity leave (I only get 6 weeks!)
  • I'm a counselor and I'm exhausted. The second half of the school year is sooo much more stressful than the first so I am dreading going back. I hide in my office a lot more than I used to. I'm also finding it difficult to listen to the kids. I start to space out...whoops. But, gotta do it!
  • Thank you for your replies :) hopefully it gets better the further along I get..
  • I work in HR and I work from 8-5 M-F.  I haven't been at this job that long-actually I had just found out I was pregnant about two weeks after I started! The first tri was rough and because I was so tired all the time, my work suffered a bit to the point where I had to meet with my supervisor.  That was really embarrassing.  So I shared around that time I was pregnant.

Now that I'm easing into my 2nd tri and feel better, my work is right back up to where it was when I first started.  I don't have an office (I have a cube) so I occasionally slip in the bathroom to close my eyes for a few minutes when needed.  I also have more snacks around to keep my energy up.  It's getting better.

  • I also do M-F 8-5. I've had to call out twice so far. Once was the day I finally got my Zofran and then once was just because I had the flu, which really had nothing to do with pregnancy.

Things have been rough though. I work a desk job, but it's a pretty high stress job, and I find myself getting a lot more overwhelmed and exhausted than I ever have before. I told DH multiple times that I didn't know how I'd do this at the end of my pregnancy. It's exhausting. But we will see how I feel as I move farther in to my 2nd tri.

  • It's slowly getting better. I work over night stocking shelves. I spend 8 hrs every night walking around lifting heavy boxes. I get two breaks and a lunch break but between the exhaustion and the ms there's been quite a few nights that I snuck away to the bathroom just to sit on the floor for a few min. I also had to tell my boss about my pregnancy a month sooner than I planned because my dr put me on a 25lb weight restriction. I'm keeping my fingers crossed it's going to get better with the holidays over and the ms easing up
  • The mornings are the worse for me. It's just getting out of bed that really sucks. And when it starts to slow down. I am still pretty tired most of the time, which is a big change for me.
  • I used to work in an extremely busy ER 7a-7p with barely enough time to eat or use the bathroom, 3-4 days a week and taught nursing clinicals one other day a week (6am-6:30pm). About 2 weeks before we concieved, I received a promotion that was M-F 8-4:30. But my schedule is super flexible where as long as I get my 8 hrs in I can make my own hours up. It was definitely a blessing in disguise - I had afternoon/evening nausea and extreme exhaustion in the afternoon so I was able to get there earlier and leave earlier to keep my productivity up and not feel so horrible in the evening. I can't imagine doing 12 hours during my first tri... that would have been horrible!
  • I usually love my job but this pregnancy has really put a strain on me and my love for the job. I work in an office where I have to be on call for 60 real estate agents. It gets extremely stressful. Our busy season is coming up and I feel like I'm alrdy busting my butt. I work m-f 9-5 no lunch break. Just not looking forward to coming back after baby. I've had a fairly easy pregnancy so far. Im 13w4days. I'm more irritable and more forgetful lol ugh pregnancy brain!
