Like an inferno in your chest. I had to avoid anything slightly spicy, acidic and chocolate. Zantac is most commonly suggested. I ate tums like per but they didn't really help.
This is a highly common pregnancy symptom. Your digestive track slows down due to the hormones. You will start to experience some digestive issues including heartburn. Try OTC meds if those don't work your doc can prescribe something. I've had gastro issues for years so I was already on a prescription med and it seems to work. Been having major issues with reflux at night. Try avoiding anything acidy (juices, tomatoes, spicy foods), chocolate, and caffeine.
Yep! Normal. Like others have suggested, try foods that aren't fried, low in fat, not to much dairy at once, smaller but more frequent meals. I was told Rolaids but do not use Tums. I can't remember why, but that is what my OB said. They also once suggested Beno. Sometimes you have gas that will push the acid up just a bit and don't realize it. That helped with #1 (although that was at 26-27 weeks). I know you can use Zantac if that doesn't work. Ask your Dr after that.
On the plus side, you'll likely have a baby born with a lot of hair. This is one of the old wives tales that is actually true, though scientists don't know why yet. Babies born with lots of hair are born to mothers who experienced bad heartburn (but not all mothers with heartburn had hairy babies).
This isn't true. I've never had heartburn and my two LOs both had a ton of hair at birth.
With DS I used Tums but they barely worked, so I switched to OTC Pepcid and that helped a lot, along with small meals, avoiding spicy/acidic/fatty foods, and occasionally sleeping in a recliner. Unfortunately, one of my biggest postpartum surprises is that the heartburn did NOT resolve after delivery. I was so miserable in the hospital because I hadn't take the medication (thinking once kid was born, I'd be fine).
Yes it's normal. Mine is severe and I've vomited because of it. I've never been one to take medications for anything. I just either suffer through or try natural remedies(I.e. Eating garlic powder for colds, cinnamon for diarrhea pains, etc.) for heartburn, I mixed two capfuls of apple cider vinegar with 12 oz. water and surprisingly, it relieved me for the rest of the day. Good luck to you!
I second the apple cider vinegar! I add a little honey too to help with the flavor. That, and staying mostly upright after eating. Laying down always makes it worse for me.

Agreed. I've always had horrible heartburn and my kids haven't had a ton of hair

This is not true. I had heartburn everyday until the day I went in to labor and my dd didn't have so much as peach fuzz on her head.
I have been taking Zantac. My heartburn is mostly at night. I try to remember the Zantac about 30 mins before dinner and it seems to help. I also try to avoid tomato, sauce, citrus and anything too spicy.
Some women are just more likely to get heartburn and it is really common in pregnancy. I remember reading it has to do with all of your digestive system being smooshed upwards by the baby and the pregnancy hormones relaxing your esophagus and it's ability to keep acids where they belong.
The best thing you can do is avoid acidic and spicy foods. Tomatoes (chili, pasta, etc) are a big killer. Drink only water and lots of it. And don't lay down shortly after eating or eat laying down. You can also try tums like everyone else said. You can try taking a walk after dinner to see if that helps. I've never had heartburn in my life and had a minor bout of it around 20 weeks or so. Thankfully it's gone now but geez it sucks and I feel for you.
Be careful with tums. Too many can inhibit iron absorption.
My OB also warned that taking too many Tums consistently can cause kidney stones (excess calcium accumulation). Because dietary adjustments weren't helping, my OB recommended 150mg Zantac before bed. It has made a world of difference!
LOL I have never heard that heartburn equals more hair. Heartburn just isn't common in my family but all of the babies in my family are born with hair. So this doesn't ring true from any of my personal experience.
I am interested to know why it is a "plus" to have a baby with hair? What's so bad about bald little cuties?
Apparently there really was a study done by John Hopkins University that showed that severity of heartburn correlated with amount of hair on the newborn. Apparently estrogen is the hormone responsible for the relaxation of the esophagus and resulting heartburn, and it's also responsible for hair growth.
