Growth Scan

So I had my 37 week check up... Technically 37 weeks 4 days lol... I also had a growth scan. So I know these thing can be off but the baby is measuring between 39 weeks 4 days and 40 weeks 1 day. He is already at 8 lbs... I have three weeks to go and he is my first. I am really freaking out I know the scans can be off but by how much? My Doctor was out on vacation so I saw his PA, she wouldn't even look at the ultra sound and kept saying everything is normal... Is it? Any other Moms have scans like this? I am just afraid he will be huge lol

Re: Growth Scan

  • FTM here.. and you're right those scans can be very inaccurate. Also remember some doctors consider 37 weeks full term so your baby really could be good to go at any time, or your EDD is just off. I wouldn't worry about it and be excited you'll get to meet your LO soon!

  • I just had one at 35 weeks exactly, and he was measuring 38 weeks 6 days in head and 38 weeks 4 days in belly. They estimated him over 7 pounds at that point. I saw my doctor yesterday and she felt my belly and estimated him at 7 1/2 (I'm now 36 weeks today). I know I will have a huge baby. I'm dreading the birth but more so the recovery since my mom and sister both had severely traumatic tears. Yay. It's definitely causing anxiety.

  • Measured 7.5 lbs at nearly 35 and a half weeks, 95th percentile. This was the case with my first and she was born at 39 weeks 11.1 pounds. My second measured along the same lines too and he was a petite 9.8 pounds. Goes to show you the estimates can be off.
  • This is why I'm content with my doctor not giving any indication of how big or small the baby may be. I'm low risk FTM pregnancy so there's been no need for any scans. Personally, I'd rather not hear a certain estimated size and be worried one way or the other, only got have the estimate to be off by a pound or two in the end.

Can I ask if you delivered them vaginally? Slash how it went for you in terms of recovery? I'm so scared. Ha.

  • I had a scan at 33 weeks and he measured 36 weeks and estimated weight of 6lbs. My OB wasn't worried at all and said the scans are notoriously inaccurate and the later the scan the less likely it will be off.

  • Just trust that your body will be able to birth your baby! If you go into the whole process "afraid of his/her size" it may affect your ability to push effectively! I know with DS when I was told the first time to push, it was a pathetic attempt on my part and my midwife was just like "you are going to have to do better than that!" At which point I gathered myself, and focused only on getting him out! I didn't think about his size (he ended up being 8 lbs 8oz) which is above average but smaller than everyone thought he would be :)
  • Thank you everyone for your words of encouragement! That growth scan just freaked me out! I defaintly will remember next time to see if we can keep those numbers a secret unless something is wrong. I don't like worrying.
  • Don't worry! They told me my first was going to be 10+ lbs and he was born at 7 lbs, 10 oz. They've already told me this one is 6 lbs, 9 oz at 34 weeks. We'll see when he pops out!
  • At my growth scan on Monday, my baby had an average weight of about 61 percentile for 36 weeks. But a gigantic head, off the charts. I sure hope one of those measurements was off otherwise I'm giving birth to a bobble head!
  • My dr said they are normally off by a pound either way.
  • They said my baby was over 6 lbs and she was born 4lbs 15oz.  The growth scans are not accurate.  Try not to stress!!  :-)
Live like there is no tomorrow..Love like you have never been hurt...
  • I'm at 39 weeks and no dilation. Baby is measuring 8 lbs 4 ounces. I'm a controllwd diabetic. We are discussing avoiding a c section. Big babies can lead to some complications and I'm with you very scared at this point. Doc said if he reaches 10 lbs I'm looking at a c section. If we induce and my body doesn't respond we are looking at a possible c section. Ughhbb

Measurements are almost always off. I'm a controlled with diet diabetic too. 8lb 4oz is not considered big for 39 weeks and there's likely no way your baby will gain 2 more lbs before birth. But people deliver 10lb babies all the time too. I would not let it bother me. You'll be fine, especially if you've got good control.

    Edit because spell check sucks
  • Thanks 4littlebears. How far along are you and how is your little bundle measuring? I take meds and try to count carbs. But some days are tough.
  • I'm 36w 4d, and I had a growth ultrasound Monday that said baby was 6lbs and 8oz. In the 60th percentile. But 2 of my 3 were nearly 9lbs when they were born and they were not too big by any means. They were also born within days of their due dates. Growth scans can be off up to a pound or two even though! They just aren't that accurate
