Pacifier Help!

Mason hates his carseat, for this reason I would love to find a pacifier he likes to help soothe him in the car.

So tell me, how do you know which pacifier they like? I've tried Soothie, WubbaNub, Tommee Tippee, NUK, and Chicco... he seems to act the same with all of them. Spits them out or chews on them as long as I hold it in his mouth.

What other brands should I try? What should I be doing to see if he likes one or do I just need to give it up?

Is there a bottle he likes? Maybe try same brand paci? Other than that, I'm in the same boat - E doesn't like binkies. She does like to suck on fabric (she's a weirdo) so, I got her a stuffed fox that's holding a little blanket and she sucks on that and it comforts her.

ETA: I also hung a mirror in front of her so she can look at herself. These two things seems to help - she hardly cries in her seat anymore unless she's super tired and fighting sleep.

M sucks on his bear blankie too. I think I'm going to get another 1 or 2 of those since it's fast becoming his security blanket and I'm scared I (or he) will lose it.

I also have a mirror in the car with his bear and a fun zebra toy that's out of reach but heloves to look at. Poor guy just hates the seat so much and screams every time we're in the car.

ETA: He hasn't used a bottle yet. But this isn't giving me hope for that journey either.
  • None of my babies (3) have taken a pacifier. Not for lack of trying. They usually start to do better in the car around four months for me. Good luck!

  • Neither of my first two kids liked the paci and it didn't matter what I tried, they wouldn't take it and keep it in.  This one takes it but can't keep it in so I actually don't give it in the car unless one of the older kids is going to be back there with her to keep it in.  Otherwise she loses it and goes nuts.  Does he seem interested in his hands?  The blankie is great if it helps him.  I definitely advise getting a couple more...my 10-year0old STILL sleeps with his little square "silky" every night and when he was smaller, he would carry it everywhere and deposit it in toy boxes, closets, drawers...there were several frantic searches for it (no back-up) and he WOULD NOT go to sleep without it.  That wasn't much help on the paci's because I was in your situation but didn't have much success, I feel for you, though, because it's the worst when they're going crazy in the car and you can't help them!  Lots of luck!!  :)

  • @Klavanga74‌ - He is interested in his hands, but doesn't use them for soothing in the car... boo!
  • @victoris+james - hang in there...maybe he will.  Is there a type of music that soothes him?  I have no idea if this could possibly work, but maybe if you create an association for him between a soothing type of music (or any type of music) and something he loves, like cuddling and rocking with you, and then start playing that music in the car?  A total shot in the dark, but might be worth a try.

Actually this used to work with Florida Georgia Line, but more recently it has stopped working I think because now he is associating it with the car. :(

This is why I'm looking for a pacifier now!

My son HATES the car seat too, the best thing that works for us is to make sure he's got a full tummy, or have someone sit back there with him which isn't always an option.

Yep this is what works best for Mason too, but sadly it doesn't work often enough, lol!
  • We've tried them all, only soothie works if a finger is in it.

The only thing I've been able to mimick as a pacifier is a nipple shield on my boob. That doesn't help with your car seat issue. Have you tried playing Baby Got Colic on your phone's speaker? Or if you can listen to it over your car stereo, this works for us too.

    Ooo, I'll try this!
  • C also hates the car seat and won't take a pacifier. I think we bought a PAC of ever single brand before giving up. We found an inexpensive toy bar attached to the car seats handle keeps her somewhat happy during the day as it gives her something to do.

Baby Girl "C" arrived on 10/07/14 (39 weeks, 6 days)

I'm sorry you've got a carseat hater too.
  • DS loved MAM brand pacis.

Dd hates all pacis too. And the car seat as well.

This is probably the same idea but we find a radio station that's all static. It calms LO right down!
  • This is going to sound crazy but just hear me out. My LO was EBF first few weeks (now takes bottles and bf), she wouldn't take a paci either. One day DH said he figured it out, yeah right I thought. But he did! If you put the paci in her mouth and then put your finger on her nose, she thinks she is at the breast and immediately latches on the paci!!!!!! Worth a shot, I couldn't believe it worked for us. Now at 10 weeks it still sometimes is the only way to get her to take the paci.
    GL!!
  • My baby is 12 weeks old and she loves the pacifier that we received in the hospital. Of course from my Baby Shower I received all different brands of Pacifiers and she hates them. So, as a matter of fact on yesterday I was in Babies R Us and I decided to look for her another pacifier like the one from the hospital (since that is the only one she loves) and I purchased the Dr. Brown's pacifier since she drinks from the Dr. Brown's bottles and she love the pacifier.

So, try to use the same brand pacifier as the bottle.

    I hope this helps!
  • Both DS and DD loved the MAM.

Sorry your little is a carseat hater too, and all this talk of MAM is making me reach for the car keys!
  • Another vote for MAM. It's all DS likes.... We did get him a wubanub for Christmas which he has been taking though
  • Aubs sometimes likes mam.. I also bought some older tommee tippee ones that are shaped like nuk ones and she occasionally likes those too.. mostly she loves latex nuks, but she hates everything in the car.. she just cries and turns into a hot sweaty mess.. its awful 90% of the time
  • Baby won't take a pack from DH or I. MIL got her to take one once. She will suck on my knuckle. But I usually just satisfy her need to suck with the boob. Not that I haven't tried many pacis.

  • Well, I am glad this pacifier thread didn't become a shit show.

S will only take a mam, though he will tolerate the soothie on the wubbnub for a bit.

Yeah, tried "baby got colic" on the car today - he just screamed louder.
  • Try holding LO tight and close against your body, as if you were breastfeeding, and then offer the pacifier. DD loves mam, and will occasionally take Dr. Browns. She despises nuk and usually trying that pacifier just results in further screaming.

  • avent worked best for us. Which is the bottle she likes so it works out. She wouldn't take the soothie, it just kept popping out of her face.
