3rd Ultrasound and now with Pediatric Cardiologist

i had my 20week ultrasound 2 weeks ago and a second ultrasound yesterday because they said they couldn't get a good picture of our baby's heart. Now the ultrasound doctor is saying they still didn't get the perfect picture of the heart and he is sending me to a pediatric cardiologist to have them do the ultrasound. He said not to worry but I am of course worried. Anyone else have any experience with this?

Re: 3rd Ultrasound and now with Pediatric Cardiologist

  • We had a fetal echocardiogram with a pediatric cardiologist because I was high risk for a congenital heart defect. It was much different than the other ultrasounds I've had. Instead of still pictures, the tech takes little video clips for the doctor to look over and make sure everything is functioning properly.

I know it is easier said than done but try not to stress yet. The doctor that we met with said to us that he sees many many patients referred to him and it is rare that he finds a problem. With the fetal Echo being such an easy and noninvasive test doctors are quick to recommend it for more information.

  • Don't really have experience but good luck. Try to focus on getting to see your LO again. FX for you both.

  • Good luck! We are going back for our second ultrasound on the 6th for the same reason. If LO doesn't cooperate this time we will also get sent to a specialist. My doctor said not to worry, she doesn't think anything is wrong at all, but that those pics are very important.
  • Just seconding what pp have said, at my 20 week they couldn't see the spine well enough and I had to go back. And then at the 2nd u/s, after the u/s tech showed the pics to the dr she had to come back and do a bunch more bc they were too blurry for the drs liking. It freaked me out but in the end the dr gave his ok that everything looked good. I just think it can be really hard to get good pics in there with an uncooperative baby!
  • Just wanted to say best of luck Hun. If there was something to be worried about at this point they would have probably said something. So try not to worry too much!

  • No experience, but fx everything is good with LO! Try not to worry if Dr says no need to yet...probably just moving around too much!

  • No experience, but just wanted to say good luck! Any time there has been an issue of concern the doctor told me about it, and I'm sure if there was something specific your doctor saw they'd tell you, too. Probably just a squirmy baby!

During the AS our tech apparently couldn't get good pics of the heart. Honestly she was kind of a troll, not nice and seriously she gave us five photos on a cd and you could tell what two are. Anyway, I got up to go to the bathroom and when I came back to the room the dr was in there saying he needed better pictures because the heart ones weren't clear. Everything turned out just fine. Don't stress. It's just really important that they get good photos of baby's heart.

I had to have a 2nd anatomy scan as well because the ultrasound tech did not get clear enough images of his heart (he was facing downwards and wouldn't flip no matter what they tried). The second set of images came back clear with no concerns. If there was any reason to be concerned I'm sure the doctor would have told you. Thinking of you and hoping the scans come back normal :)!
  • I had to go back for a second ultrasound because he wasn't cooperating the first time, but everything was perfectly fine when they could see it. No worries. I'm sure you'll be ok.
  • At 20 weeks they told us that everything looked ok, but that it was really too early to see a lot of detail.  Due to high risk for heart defects we had an echocardiogram about 3 weeks later.  try to think of it as another opportunity to see baby!  FX everything turns out ok.

  • Thanks for all the responses. I am trying not to think about it and worry so much. I have my echocardiogram on Tues so just trying to stay positive right now. I really appreciate the thoughts!
  • Wishing you the best of luck. My ultrasound tech said we might have to come back because he was moving a lot and kept his arm on his chest. She was getting frustrated and moved on and then came back at the end. Ended up not having to get anymore but while she was saying that she couldn't get a good picture of the heart, my mind started racing.

  • I'm another one who had to get two scans because my LO wouldn't cooperate.  What can I say?  He/She is definitely my kid!  Fortunately it ended up being fine.  FX it's the same for you too.

  • I had a fetal echo a couple weeks ago. It was really long and a little nerve wracking, but in the end everything seemed ok. There were certain parts that they said they couldn't tell for sure, but overall it made me feel better. It lasted almost 2 hours, so be prepared for that!
  • I haven't had the experience of being sent to a pediatric cardiologist, but I am scheduled in February for a second ultrasound. The ultrasound technician was unable to get good pictures of the heart or feet... little boy was hugging my posterior placenta and would not turn around or move. Baby boy did the same thing at our 3D/4D ultrasound. Who knows? I may end up at the pediatric cardiologist eventually!
OB/Gyn said he is not concerned because everything else looked great. Also mentioned there would usually be a "trickle-down effect" on the kidneys and such, if there were heart issues. I know it is easier said than done, but I am trusting my doctor. He is not one to offer an opinion, unless he feels strongly about it.
Sending you positive thoughts (hugs) :)

  • We are now 26!weeks. We had the same thing happen where we had to have a level 2 ultra sound because they couldn't see the heart , nose or kidneys from our first scan.little man was sooo active they still didn't see his four chambers so They sent us to a pediatric cardiologist and again he was all over the place but they were able to take time and eventually got everything . Praying for you for the same out come! It's not easy to not worry because I too did he same even when the dr assured me it would be ok. Keep your head up and be thankful your little one is growing good and his is just preparing us for life with the unexpected
