Trying to Get Pregnant

Pets and babies

I'm a little concerned about how our large dogs will act around a baby. One of them still have a lot of puppy energy and accidentally knocks people over if he runs into them. He's getting better but I'd love to hear any NICE suggestions and experiences others have had.

Re: Pets and babies

  • Obedience training.

Bring a baby doll home a couple weeks before you give birth. Pay attention to it & such. Dog will learn that baby is a member of the family.

When baby arrives bring home something that smells like baby.

As always try not to leave baby & doggy unattended. I have two cats, but my last dog did just fine.

  • Out of curiosity, what type of dogs?

Ok for serious this is what we did with DS. We wrapped him in a blanket at the hospital and took it home to the dogs while I was still in the hospital. The dogs (2 and 6 at the time) sniffed at it and got used to the smell. They did fine once we got home. They needed a little more one on one time because they went from being the babies to another baby. We didn't have any problems. We just made sure the two dogs got attention. They actually became extremely protective and loving very quickly.

  • I think it differs from animal to animal how they will react. We were nervous about how the husky would be with my nephew and she's been amazing. My cat was great with him as a infant but as a toddler she cant stand him.
bringing the baby's scent home on a blanket is the method I've heard works best.

  • I think proper prep and I obedience training are appropriate. Most dogs I have seen catch on quickly.

  • Our dog sounds a little like yours (very excitable, playful, gets carried away easily) but we had no problems when S was born. One thing that was helpful in the early days was just really carefully monitoring the dog near baby (common sense), and encouraging him to investigate but not get too close. They are best buds now - S's first word was "doggy" haha. You can prepare a little bit but I think MOST dogs have intuition about little baby siblings - you and your partner can just help reinforce that
