Cloth Diapering

Yeast Rash Questions

my 4.5 month old daughter has had a yeast rash for quite awhile, but it wasn't until her 4m well visit to the pediatrician that I knew what it was and how to treat it. I got disposable liners to use while using Lotramin twice a day, and saw significant improvement. Stopped using it and it came back within days, so we switched to disposables to treat the rash and diapers for good. We use Nicki's Pocket Diapers, and I emailed them to get their washing instructions for yeast, which was a 30 min soak in HOT water with 1/4 cup oxygenated bleach. I did that, but I'm afraid it's not enough? I read online that adding some tea tree oil is helpful, as well as drying in the sun (not an option anytime soon based on the forecast) or in the dryer on HIGH heat. Is drying on high heat going to damage the shells? Also, I've been treating the rash consistently with Lotramin twice daily for 4 days (second time around). It has greatly improved, but she still has some redness in the front (like where a c section scar would be), as well as on her thighs where the cloth diaper leg holes rest. The disposable diapers don't touch that area. How long does the rash typically last? I hate using this stuff on her bum and an anxious to return to more natural products. And do I wait 5 days after the rash is completely gone to go back to cloth? Last question - do I need to disinfect all of her linens? The only thing her bare bottom has touched is the waterproof mat on her changing pad, but then that gets tossed into her hamper with everything else. I don't want to further shrink all of her clothes. Thank you for any help y'all can provide!

Re: Yeast Rash Questions

  • Using 1/4 cup of bleach on the clean diapers (and lots of rinses afterward) is the normal recommendation for treating diapers with yeast. It would be advisable to also treat the changing mat (and cloth wipes if you use them), but your other linens are probably okay.

My pedi has us treat the rash for at least a week to ten days after the rash fully disappears. I think the last time N had yeast, he was in disposables for two weeks. The skin will still be very sensitive, so you may want to be extra gentle with the red areas. Be sure to pat them dry after using a wipe, and a gentle diaper cream or coconut oil can help.

  • I thought oxygenated bleach didn't disinfect and you needed real bleach?

  • The pediatrician did say she had eczema and a yeast rash in the same area, so you are probably right. It makes the most sense! Also, I haven't been treating those areas for eczema; I've been treating them for yeast instead. She had horrible eczema on her back, and I've finally got it under control, so I'll go ahead and treat those areas while she's in disposables. Thanks!! And I'll toss the diapers in with real bleach. What about drying them on high heat, since it doesn't look like we will be seeing the sun for quite awhile in Atlanta? Will that be a problem just this once?

  • There's no reason to. bleach will do the trick.

  • Thank you Lacey! I've been planning to make a coconut oil, lavender, and tea tree oil cream for her bum, but need to sit down and figure out the correct dilution. How much are you using? Thank you so much! So glad to hear that it worked! That was going to be my "go to" solution for keeping the rash away for good!
