Transfer from RnP to Crib

DD is STTN consistently for 7-8 hour stretches. She seems to be programmed for midnight, and if put to bed sooner will wake after a couple hours to eat, or not fall asleep at all until 1130/12. She sleeps in the RnP every night, and I'm looking for tips on how to transition her to her crib. We swaddle her now, otherwise her flailing limbs wake her up. Also, any tips for getting her to fall asleep for the night earlier? TIA!

Re: Transfer from RnP to Crib

  • No advice about transferring to crib as we will be fighting that battle soon also. As far as going to bed earlier, we were having the same issue with a 10:30-11pm bedtime. We tried putting DD down earlier and she would still wake up at 10:30-11 and need to be rocked back to sleep. It took probably 10 days of consistency, starting her bedtime routine around 8:30 (bath/play in tub, bottle then sleep), but after those 10ish days she no longer wakes up at 10:30-11 and she's asleep between 9:15-9:30. Also over those 10 days you could try slowly inching up bedtime.

  • Im scared for this as well. DS is sleeping in the RNP.  Weve been trying naps here and there in the crib.  Hes a bad napper anywhere unless hes being held so its no indication if he will sleep well or not in the crib.

Im thinking about trying it next weekend.

  • We transferred at 8 weeks. We inclined the mattress, made an U-nest out of a small towels and after a few days of being miserable and sucking it up, it got better. She doesn't sleep as long as she used to in the RnP, but I've seen other moms whose babies still STTN. She's still swaddled to this day.

As for earlier bedtime.. Just start the bedtime routine earlier. What time are you starting?

  • We transitioned from rnp to crib at 6 weeks, one night we simply just put her in there vs the rnp and she did great.  I would try this first and only resort to special measures if the transition doesn't go well.  Personally I figured why worry about something that hasn't happened, just see what does happen first.

  • We're going from a combo of bassinet/cosleeping to the crib. I was supposed to start lat Friday but I quit because I couldn't hack the crying. Going for it again tonight!

  • Big believer in the magic sleep suit...DS has slept 10-11 hours straight in the crib wearing it for the past 3 nights!!!!
  • The magic suit did nothing for us when we tried to transition. We are back in RnP and swing most nights.

  • At 13 weeks, we still use a swing for naps and nighttime sleep. DS cries the moment we put him into crib and has been a poor sleeper since we came home from the hospital. Typically goes to sleep around 10-11:30pm. I'm hoping that once his sleeping gets better, we can use the crib.

  • We've been using the inclined mattress and U-nest for about 3 weeks. He napped there fine from the start but it took a while to STTN again, and he still doesn't always. The first night, he woke up every 2 hours and I wanted to die. We are still using the Miracle Blanket to swaddle his arms, but I usually leave his feet out overnight in case we (DH) give up and put him back in the swing.

We have not tried starting the bedtime routine earlier than 10pm because she often doesn't fall asleep for the night until 1130-12. On 2 occasions she fell asleep as early as 1030, but woke up earlier in the morning. Her routine has been sleep through the night for 6 hrs (although as much as ten hours), wake to eat, sleep another three hours, wake to eat, and sleep again. She typically doesn't nap for longer than 30 minutes for the rest of the time she is up during the day.
  • Thank you for the tips and advice. My nervousness is due to her being swaddled at night now in the RnP, and when she isn't, her body movements wake her up. We swaddle with a blanket for a snug fit, and haven't used any of the other types of swaddled, though we do own them. Seems like she has more wiggle room in those. Any suggestions on swaddles that work in the crib are welcome. I know she'll just wiggle right out of a regular blanket.
  • @lmchurley‌ we used to start bedtime at around 10 too and eventually she wouldn't go down until at least 12am. It was a struggle. We all of a sudden started 8-830 and now she's down between 930-10 and gets up for the day around 10am. When she used to sleep later she still got up around 10-11am anyways. She's been better about napping since as well.

As for swaddling, we use summerme swaddles with the velcro. Were currently transitioning to the zipadee since she's been breaking out more lately. Good luck figuring things out, you can do it!

Thank you for this!! This is our second LO and for some reason it never occurred to us not to swaddle their legs so that we could strap them into the swing and rocking play better. We have always tried to do a sideways strap in around the swaddle, which never works very well. Duh!

  • We're attempting the transfur tonight! Fingers crossed for smooth sailing!!!
  • How did it go?!

  • We made it a few hours and then it was meltdown city for DS :( we will get there, I think I'm going to ease in gradually
  • We transferred using an inclined crib mattress and towels under the sheet as well. I think DD started her sleep regression way early at 3 months so she wasn't sleeping in her rock'n'play so we figured why not start now?

We also use the Merlin magic sleep suit. I am a big fan. It didn't give us the instantaneous 10 hours of sleep like some reviewers say, but it's been a great transition from the swaddle and into the crib. She falls asleep very quickly in it and I'm even able to put her in her crib awake if she's wearing it for bedtime (naps, she still needs rocked).

She still hasn't gone back to sleeping through the night like she was before 12 weeks (16 weeks tmrw) but we're doing much better than we were.
