I just found out the people that are going to start watching my child next week do not get the flu shot. They have 4 children, 2 are school aged. Would you still let your child go to that daycare? My daughter will be 6 months old on Monday. I plan to get her the flu shot at her next appointment.

The trouble is they are friends of mine, and they told me that they fully vaccinate so I assumed they got the flu shot as well. Thank you for your input.

If they didnt fully vaccinate otherwise, my answer would be different, but just the flu shot... I'd probably be OK with and just make sure my kid got one

it wouldn't bother me. The flu shot only prevents a small percentage of the flu anyways. we live with my parents and they don't get the flu shot, but DH, I and the kids all get it.

It would bother me because illogic bothers me, but I would let him go there.

I would probably be a little pushy about "why don't you get it?" Not so much because of my own child but because of immunocompromised people everywhere.

Skipping the flu shot is one of my pet peeves, though, so maybe just me.

I'll admit, I've spent the majority of my life (before kids) not getting the flu shot but have never had a beef with vaccines..... I guess it just never... seemed that vital to me and I hated needles so never went out of my way to get one. Never got the flu either (lucky). It was more so out of just not thinking about it than purposefully not...if that makes sense. I also am kind of a hermit and didn't ever work or spend a lot of time in a higher risk environment

Now that I have a child though.... give me all the shots...and him too. Damn petri dish

Eh, their reasoning is illogical and invalid.

It wouldn't bother me as long as they do vaccinate otherwise. As long as your DD gets the shot. I didn't get the flu shot until last year but DD got it before that.

Do they get the actual real FLU every time... or "the flu" , I wonder...(rhetorical question)

There is nothing that irks me more than people calling a stomach bug "the flu" or a rougher than usual cold "the flu" simply because it falls in this season. I find that very often these people never actually get THE flu.

Yes, I realize people can still indeed get the flu with the shot... I guess I'm just skeptical that it's every frickin' time, and it especially irks me when people insist it's BECAUSE of the shot. No. No it's not. If you really do indeed get the real flu every single season even with the shot....that is some terrible terrible luck for sure. I'm skeptical.

Also it almost kind of feels like people just throw that reasoning out there as just an automatic justification...but the actual reality is maybe ONE year they got the shot and unfortunately got the flu anyway....and that turned into "every time"

DD goes to a center, so I just assume that she is around kids whose parents are too stupid/lazy/something to get their kid vaccinated against the flu.

I would talk to them about the importance of vaccinations, but if your kid is old enough to get the vaccine this season, then... it's probably ok.

Edited to clarify that the Center requires that kids be up to date with all other vaccines.

I think there's a lot of mis-information about the Flu vaccine anyway. And unless you are already at the doctor's a lot of people don't want to bother taking that extra step to go in and get it (with school age kids they likely aren't still getting yearly vaccines etc)

You're right about this years terrible flu strain not being in the mix. The flu vaccine changes every year based on some algorithm of what a group of scientists think will be "hot" that flu season. So basically it's just an educated guess since there are so main strains that they can't possibly shove them all into one vaccine each year.

That said, DH, I, and my DD all got the flu shot/will be getting the flu shot this year (6 month appointment in Jan). Because, flu shots yo.

As an RN this drives me crazy. The flu shot is not live and cannot give you the flu. It temporarily suppresses your immune system while it is working on building up flu antibodies so if you come in contact with a cold virus you will be more susceptible. I have to ask people if they have gotten the flu shot as part of my assessments and I get "no I don't get the flu shot because it always gives me the flu" all of the time.
