June 2015 Moms

plans for older siblings for summer???

When the baby comes in june, my kids will be out of school and home with me. With a newborn we wont be able to live at the pool and lakeside like last summer. What suggestions do you have for fun things we can do together, especially so they dont feel like their little brother or sister is getting in the way, as they LOVE to swim???

  • You can still do those things with the older ones-- perhaps have a family or friend come and help you out, or go out for a couple hours around babys feeding.

We don't live by family, but my sister is coming up to help with DS #1 and take him to his day care and help him at night while DH works and stuff....

You should still try to normalize the "big kids'" lives as much as you can!

  • Depends on age group/your financial situation but are there any daycamp/activities on your area? Growing up, my mom used to present us with a ton of brochures (art class, childrens musical theater, swim lessons, tennis lessons - etc) and we would pick a couple to do. It kept us really busy and saved her from having to entertain us every day. Other than things like tennis lessons, a lot of these were offered at our local YMCA or advertised on flyers at town hall.
  • We will definitely be hitting up splash pads in our local parks. There are so many shaded areas I can sit with baby while my two older kids play in the water and can easily transition over to the park/play area. My oldest will probably do at least one day camp for a week this summer. We will also be heading up to the lake as much as possible. As long as I have my Moby wrap to keep my hands free this summer will be so nice! Also I have seen wraps that can go in the water... WrapDuo is one. I will be investing in one of these. A good wrap can make you day with older kids go so much better! Completely hands free even when bending over because the wrap can support the baby's head.
  • From the age of 5-18 I was always at camp. From 5-8 it was a day camp that was all summer long, then from 8-18 it was a sleep away camp where i went for 4 weeks at a time, typically at the end of the summer.  The weeks that I wasnt at camp we spent it at the pool. I know thats not possible (pool that is) with a new born but look into summer camps for the older kids. It will give them something to look forward to every day!

  • Not sure where you are located, but I'm in Michigan and I still plan on pretty much living at the lake this summer! There is lots of shade at our lake and it's breezy most days. I have a bassinet with a bug shield, but I saw a tip once about using a fitted crib sheet over a the top of a pack and play as a way to keep baby shaded and protected by bugs.

Splash pads are another great idea! The one near us has great shady areas where you can protect baby but still be able to see older kids.

  • Our regular summer plans won't really change too much. We'll just be doing the same things with a newborn in tow. I just try to keep baby in shade as much as possible and wear them to help with my mobility.

  • I plan on wearing baby and heading to splash pads and the zoo also. We're fortunate that our zoo is really easy for me to manage with DS 1 by myself.

I'm also contemplating asking our parents to take DS1 in august for a week or so, so he gets some solo attention. But I don't want it to be too close to the arrival of baby that he feels shipped away.

  • I don't rally have any plans yet, just wanted to say reading all these great summer ideas makes me happy on this cold winter day!
  • Splash pad, similar to a pool but lower chance of drowning.
  • Good ideas. It has been awhile since I've had a newborn, so it feels a little like ill be immobile lol...i guess i forget i can strap the baby too me and away we go !
  • I plan on going to the beach and using a baby shade tent ☺️ was my plan or else my nine year old will not like her little brother or sister ,
  • Definitely if it isn't too hot lots of playground time, splash pad, etc (baby wear and shade will be my friends). I put my oldest in some local 'camps' last year which he LOVED. They are drop off and 2-3 hours in the morning. We will do lots of those I think. My parents are local and in the early days especially I think there will be lots of playing at their house, hikes with their papa etc.

Im a little worried about my younger son because he won't be old enough for the camps like his brother, and he is very very VERY attached, to us both. My oldest took the new baby totally in stride, Im not sure that will be the case with Isaac.
