Pregnant after a Loss

Painting...

My family is in the process of moving (like I don't have enough to stress about) however it is a slow move since the new place needs new carpet, paint, and cleaning.

My question is about the paint. Is it safe for me to assist with the painting? I've read conflicting opinions online about painting while pregnant.

Obviously it will be acrylic indoor paint, windows will be open and I will be wearing a mask and taking breaks. I just really want to help since my DH has been doing all the work....plus I love painting and have never been able to paint my own house before! I'm excited and I'm starting to get excited about getting the nursery ready!!! And I'm welcoming any distraction until the u/s.

Re: Painting...

  • Most paints these days are safe. We painted our DS room while I was pregnant with him . I remember asking the person at the supply shop and he said to just keep it well ventilated . Sounds like you are going a step above with the mask ! Just don't over due it mama :)

  • I painted my new house last weekend as well and I felt fine, I also used a mask. The guy at the service desk said a mask wasn't necessary but I would rather be on the safe side of things. Good luck !

  • Be sure to get low or no VOC paints. They're available everywhere now. Even with that, though, there are people who recommended pregnant women don't do any painting at all. A mask and good ventilation will help a lot.

  • Thanks everyone! I have to say I am looking forward to 2015!
  • I do not paint while pregnant because I'm a worrier. If there is ever something I'm not sure about I just avoid it and save myself the worry later.

When we had painting done I had a hard time with the smell even when I wasn't in the room, which signaled me to keep away. I'd say if you have no VOC paint and lots of ventilation you're probably ok, but if you start to not feel well or get a headache then take it as a sign.
  • Personally, I would not paint indoors while pregnant. I painted some furniture earlier in my pregnancy, but it did it outdoors on a breezy day. That's the only way I felt comfortable doing it.

And quite honestly, the guy behind the counter as Lowes is not the person I would be going to for advice regarding what's safe during pregnancy. This would be a good question for your doctor.

  • I repainted our entire bathroom at 7 months with DS. I would just make sure you're in a well ventilated area and take breaks.

  • I would personally sit back and relax. Painting can be a lot of work. However, if you really want to help, pp advice to take frequent breaks may be helpful.

  • We are moving soon too- our painter is using low odor paint (I won't be there but he said just in case there's any smell when I move in). I think low odor paint, mask, open windows...you should be fine :)

  • I would ask your OB just to be on the safe side. I would think that low VOC paint would be okay if the windows were open. I would also look into wearing gloves.
