Car Travel with an 8 week old...advice/tips?

Hello. I am new to posting on this site, but have been reading the board throughout my pregnancy. DH and I are planning a trip to visit his family in FL when LO is approximately 8 weeks old. We decided to drive rather than fly from Chicago. We are estimating it taking about 3 days. I am EBF, so I know we will have to stop a lot. One concern of mine is LO usually sleeps when we are driving. I'm concerned she will sleep all day then when DH needs to sleep in hotel she will be wide awake! Any suggestions/tips? Try to keep LO awake during drive? Drive at night? TIA.

  • I will be following this as well. I will be driving 18hrs in a couple weeks by myself! I also EBF. My sister has done this a couple times with her kids and gone through the night and it's gone really well for her.

  • We made what turned out to be a 14 hour drive right before Christmas (and we're going back sometime after the first). We just took or time and stopped for long sit down dinners or visited somewhere (like a small museum or store) every time DS2 needed to nurse. That allowed him to be awake for a while and allowed DS1 to not go completely crazy.

Otherwise I'd say travel through the night.

  • Thank you all for the advice! I'm going to research places to stop along the way tonight. I hadn't thought much about the dirty bathrooms, will have to buy some disposable pads!
  • We've only done 3 hour trips with lo. I took a freshly pumped bottle and feed that to him while I pumped and dh drove. It was nice to not have to stop. I also took along books which I read to him when he was awake.

If I we're going for a longer drive, I would probably try to only stop once in the middle and give bottles/pump on the other feeds.
