Anyone tried chiropractic or considered for baby?

I'm having a little panic attack here and I'll try to not make this too long.  First, baby has reflux and it started to get really painful for her a few weeks ago so she's on Zantac but I never wanted this to be a long-term solution and would like to wean away.  Several friends have taken their kids to a well-known local chiropractor since they were born.  Our pediatrician also recommended some kind of hands-on work for her...massage, chiropractic, osteopath, etc.  She had her first "adjustment" yesterday.  I asked a lot of questions beforehand and I held her the whole time.  He was super gentle and it was basically like her getting a little massage.  It seemed like she spit up a lot yesterday but not once today until bedtime.  She had her normal bottle then we were trying to put her to bed but she was really upset.  I thought maybe she was hungry so we gave her a little bit more and she seemed content.  Until I laid her on my lap for a minute and I thought I heard some sort of a "thunk" in her back/neck (I can't describe the sound, you know when a joint cracks or something but it wasn't loud and I'm not even 100% sure it came from her or that I didn't imagine it), she spit up and was really upset after that.  It took awhile to calm her down after that and I held onto her for 45 minutes after because it scared me.  She is now sleeping soundly.  I keep going in to check that she's breathing and she's fine.  My mind immediately jumped to the chiro appt and I'm worried he did something to her.  Also am worried that maybe she aspirated with that spit up.

On another note, I forgot two of her doses of Zantac in the last three days and so it's possible it's lost some effectiveness for her.  Anyone had experience with chiropractic for their LO's or know of people who did?  Am I being overly worried?  After all, she is soundly asleep and when she was upset it wasn't as upset as I've seen her and I was able to calm her down in about five minutes or so.  I have an enormous fear of SIDS and it's really ramped up tonight.  Any words of wisdom?  Thanks in advance!

  • I'm just going to straight up tell you I think it's BSC to take a baby to a chiropractor. People kept telling us we should do that with DD because she's "fussy" but they can fuck off. She's a normal baby. They tried to say "oh it's stressful coming out of the birth canal and they get all squished up and can push things around". They're squishy, that's what they're made for! Also mine didn't come out of the birth canal so try again. With that being said a couple of people had said they did it and they swear by it. Maybe it's possible that he knocked something out of whack but I doubt it. Call your doctor. That's what they're there for.

  • Based on what you described he did (gentle massage), it's probably nothing and you might just be reading into things. I would monitor her closely and if you are really worried, call your doctor.

I have been seeing my chiropractor once a month for almost 10 years and I believe in the benefits of chiropractic care for overall well being. That being said, I married into a family of doctors and from conversing with them, I know that doctors tend to be rather dismissive of chiropractors so be prepared in case your pediatrician advises against seeing a chiropractor. My chiro did offer a free manipulation of DS1 but DH wasn't comfortable so we never did it.

  • Our pediatrician actually recommended this guy.  He specializes in infants.  Thanks for the advice, she's doing well this morning!

  • My dd has reflux is on zantac and goes to a chiropractor for us it's helped her sleep better , our chiropractor is very gentle and it's mainly massaging it's helped . Also for her fussiness i bathe her in lettuce water , google it and see if your interested . It's an old remedy some people may think it ridiculous but trust me when u have a fussy baby and in pain you'll try anything for them and your sanity . Good luck :) oh and if your baby is on zantac it's very important to not kiss dosages
  • Sorry I didn't actually read your post... a little too long, but I'll answer your question on the title of the post... I have not tried it but know several people who have and who have been really happy with it. I don't know at what age babies can start going but if your pedi already referred you to one, I would think it's fine. If you feel good about it, go for it. I would also ask around to see if you have any friends who have had a good experience with a chiro that they can recommend.

  • Chiropractic is at best placebo and at worst can cause serious harm, particularly to infants.

Respectfully disagree. Placebo my ass. My chiro saved me from months of excruciating pain when I was pregnant.

I don't know much about the practice for infants though but I do have one friend who has had her whole family adjusted monthly from birth and they all seem ok. Totally anecdotal but that is the only experience I have with it.

I would lean toward the missed doses being the culprit though.
