Transitioning to Crib check-in (Update on your progress?)

About a week ago @Klavanga74‌ posted about transitioning your LO to the crib. Most people were right about to start, so I am curious how it is going for everyone and if you have any new tips/tricks to share!

How old was your LO when you transitioned to crib? (Or when do you plan to)

How long did it take you to make the transition? How did it go?

Any tips or tricks that have helped you?

  • We are slowly starting the process by having LO take one of her naps in her crib during the day. She is 3wk 1d. She is still in our room at night.

My current internal debate is when to switch her to the crib at night. She has been doing a good 2 hour nap in the crib during the day, which is perfect, but I am hoping for 3-4 hour stretches at night. I would love to do it when my husband is off work, which is next week (so she will be 4 weeks) or after Christmas (she will be 9 weeks). That way he can help me with the transition.

Our process is to nurse her then give her a bottle of formula (we normally supplement) then I swaddle her and Rock her standing in front of the crib. She has a mobile that makes heart beat noises so I turn that on and when she falls asleep I lay her down. It usually takes 3 rounds to get her to not wake up when I lay her down, about a 15-20 minute process.

  • We don't have a crib yet! I really need to get on that. For my other 2, we did it around 5-6 weeks and they did great. A little white noise and continuing to swaddle helped us. I am more nervous about DD and DS #1 sharing a room for the next year (or less). They both sleep well at night so it should be fine, but moving DS to a new room in his crib is a little nerve wracking!

  • We are still working on it, so far we have accomplished no longer using the vibrating feature on the RNP.

  • Yup, that sure was me that started that thread...no progress from us! She's giving us longer stretches in the RNP so I haven't wanted to mess with it!!

  • I have been having her nap in her crib since the weekend. She does well. She's taking shorter naps, but i think she started doing that in the PNP already. Tonight will be her first night in the crib. She is 7 weeks and 5 days old. I'm hoping to have her fully transitioned by the time I go back to work 2 weeks from tomorrow.

  • We haven't started yet. I'm waiting to put her in the crib until she sleeps longer. Right now she is waking up at least three times a night to eat. Until that is down to one or two (consistently) there is no incentive for me to move her out of the room. Although I may try putting her in the cradle rather than the rock and play in a week or so. At least then she will be used to sleeping flat.

  • We moved DS to his crib from his bouncer when he was 5 months old. We went cold turkey and had no issues. He was already sleeping through the night. I don't know that I'll wait that long this time around but I don't think we'll even try until she's 3-4 months old. She currently sleeps in the RNP in our room.

  • DD is still sleeping in the RNP.  She is 5.5 weeks. RNP is in the nursery at night, we started that when she was 2 weeks. I have been flirting with the idea of trying the crib - we tried when we transitioned her into the nursery, but we realized that was just too early.  I think she is hitting a growth spurt and waking more frequently again at night right now and eating more, so I am going to wait a little while before we try the crib again.  We may try at 7 -8 weeks.

  • I don't plan on transitioning for another month or so, but we have started laying him in his crib and interacting with him a bit so he gets used to the feel.  After Thanksgiving he will begin taking 1 nap a day in there, probably mid-morning.  Right now he sleeps exclusively in his bassinet, and the mattress in the bassinet is the same brand as that in the crib and also incredibly firm, so I'm not too worried.

  • Well I've gotten her back in the bassinet from my bed, so that's major.

I think I need softer/flannel sheets. I find that she likes to lay on soft material.
  • Zombie thread--couldn't find a newer one --if there is one. Mine is 13lbs and 24 inches. Her co-sleeper is definitely still suitable, but she keeps brushing her hands against the sides of it. Was planning on doing the transition in another month or so, but now I'm considering earlier.
Now that we are all a little further along, how have your transitions to cribs gone?
  • We started using the crib around 10 weeks. I change him, feed him, swaddle him, and then put him down while drowsy with a white noise machine on and a pacifier in his mouth. Even if he fusses for a bit, he usually falls asleep quickly..

  • I've been trying to get dd to nap in the crib a couple times a day but she's fighting it. Pedi told me to let her cry for 10-15 minutes in the crib if she's tired to see if she'll fall asleep. That hasn't worked well. The first day I got one 25 minute nap after an hour+ of crying, white noise, pacifier use, swaddling and rocking. Since then I've gotten a 30 and a 40 minute nap, both times swaddled and drowsy with her smoothie. I started this last week at 10 weeks.

  • We are doing a lot better at night. We had to figure out when DD was ready to fall asleep for the night. Originally, we were pushing a 9:00 bed time, but she wasn't ready. She would sleep for 20-30 minutes then wake up. We now start the bedtime routine closer to 10.

I plan on working to move this up closer to when I return to work (April).

I do want to work on putting DD to bed drowsy but awake for naps, and unswaddled, so that the transition to daycare is easier on her sleep. I don't plan to start that until after the new year when my husband goes back to work.

My only advice is swaddling and white noise, which seem to help dd.

  • Well since we're now going through some sort of sleeping strike I decided to try to change things up a bit. He still sleeps in his pack n play in our room during the night but I'm putting him in his crib now for afternoon naps. He normally won't tolerate it but at the moment he's in there sleeping and actually put himself to sleep. Fingers crossed this keeps working! I eventually plan to transition him to his own room around 6 months.

Update the crib is together and we moved him with no issues just before Christmas. Now I just need to work on getting him to nap in there.

We still haven't put our crib together

  • Anyone else have issues with their baby's breathing? Our doc mentioned it was tracheamalacia (apparently common) but because of it, haven't felt comfortable moving her to her crib yet. LO sleeps in our room in the pack and play for now and that has been going well, but the thought of her being in a different room (even though it's just a few steps away) completely creeps me out.

We started LO on her crib when she was 6W4D old because she grunting in her sleep was keeping us awake at night. We warm where she lays with a hot water bottle before we put her down, Velcro swaddle her, turn the sound machine on in her nursery, I nurse her then we make sure she is asleep before we put her down. We also have a night vision monitor and that can 'shush' into if she starts squirming around (shushing is effective with her). She's been sleeping 7-9 hours straight in her crib since then! We are enjoying it while it lasts... But two happy parents here!
  • Dd has been doing pretty well napping in her crib the past few days but she absolutely has to be swaddled in some way. Lately this is true for sleeping at night in her RnP too. The only place she can sleep unswaddled is in someone's arms then the second she's put down, no matter how deeply she's sleeping, her hands creep up, attack her face, and wake her. I never used to swaddle during the day but it's the only way she'll go down for a nap now. Its like she has no control over her hands and arms when she sleeps and they have a mind of their own. She will be 12 weeks on Thursday.

  • LO will only sleep in the crib swaddled, some days he will go down quickly others he will need extra rocking and nursing to get him sleeping and then put him down. He still eats every 3-2-2 hours at night so after the first wake up I bring him to my bed to nurse and we are both able to fall back to sleep quickly. DD was STTN by this time

  • Last night we put her in the crib which is in our room near the foot of the bed ... and she slept til 5Am. She's only done that once before- (the night after she got her two month shots). Prior to last night she'd been in the bassinest and she'd wake up around 2 every night and id feed her and she'd go back to sleep. What I think was happening was every night she'd managed to scoot herself up til top of her head was pressed against the bassinest every night and actually that would wake her... I had been assuming she had scooted up there because she would move around when she'd fuss for food. Now with more room maybe she not waking herself up.... Or could just be coincidence !

  • Trying out the crib in her nursery for the first time tonight. It's giving me anxiety! I've been watching her sleep on the monitor for an hour.
