International travel during pregnancy

I will ask my doctor at my next appointment, but until then...
My husband just won an incentive trip for work. The trip is to Spain and Portugal. I will be 28 weeks at the time of the trip.
Does anyone have any experience traveling that late in pregnancy? Can I even travel that far that late? Any tips or tricks that will make this better?

Re: International travel during pregnancy

  • You should be fine. By ob told me that I can travel internationally till 32 week and nationally 36 week. There is a possibility I'm going to Paris with work one March when I will be 27/28 weeks and her only advise was to get up and walk on the flight.

  • Pretty sure its fine as long as you're not a high risk pregnancy and will have access to medical care...but check with your OB
  • Yep, you shouldn't have any issues, assuming there is no cruise portion of the trip. It's always best to bring a doctors note just in case; an airline can deny you if they think you're a risk or if you can't prove how far along you are, but that generally doesn't happen until 36+ weeks. How fun - super jealous!!

  • Definitely ask your doctor, but I thought this link that was included in my weekly Bump email was pretty interesting/helpful. Have fun!

  • I'm heading to South Africa from 24-27 weeks. I'm nervous - my OB said, "have fun - wear compression socks and walk a lot" my cousin (also an OB) said he wasn't a fan of his patients doing it but I should be fine.

We bought the tickets and all excursion plans before my BFP and didn't buy insurance...so it's all money down the drain if I don't go. That said - baby boy is worth more than money, so if there are any issues later on, I'm canceling.

You may have trouble getting insurance with a "preexisting" condition. So be aware...

It sounds awesome though if you can make it work!!!
  • I work internationally and as a policy we won't fly anyone, or their family members, pregnant at any stage for liability reasons (I work a lot with overseas relocations and people who travel internationally frequently for business). I would ask hubs to check with his company to see if you are for sure eligible to go, and also triple and quadruple check that you have international health coverage.

If your doctor gives the go ahead you should be fine at 28 weeks. Have a wonderful time in Spain! We love it and this lo was conceived there
  • My mother worked as an FA up until 30 weeks with 3 pregnancies. The only reason she stopped is because she was just too pregnant to be on her feet 10-16 hours a day. I'm planning on doing the same.

  • No experience here, but DH and I are going to Spain for his cousin's wedding (with a side trip to Portugal) in early March! I'll be 26 weeks when we take off. No worries from me unless my MW has concerns. Also, make sure to check with your airline first about their pregnancy policy and get a letter from your doc if needed, too. Also, I plan to request an emergency exit seat or upgrade to business class if needed and I will be sure to have my compression socks with me, too. I hope you guys have a great time! Spain is amazing!

  • @AmyCee  Just wanted to state that I was in South Africa for the first four/five months of my first pregnancy.  I did lots of travel between London, South Africa, California, Europe and was fine.  There is nothing special about traveling while pregnant except slightly uncomfortable.

Although it did get me upgrade to Business Class during a flight from South Africa to London which I totally appreciated.
  • I'm flying back to the states from Qatar in mid February for 2 weeks. Everything I've read says that a low-risk pregnancy should be fine-- just to stay well hydrated and get up for walks a lot. It's already an uncomfortable 24 hours of traveling so I'm sure it's not going to be that enjoyable while pregnant but I have to see my family and friends... it's been almost 1 year :(

  • Oh awesome! I love Portugal - get a good bottle of port wine for when you can drink again :-) Meantime, I'd recommend bringing a large refillable water bottle. I had trouble getting enough water from the busy flight attendants on my recent 8.5 hour flight from Germany to NYC. And I couldn't buy a large bottle of water after security check, only small bottles (which were stupidly expensive). Next time I will just bring my own reusable bottle to fill after security, so I can relax a bit more when the stewardesses are busy. I was too shy to tell them my issue (at only 16 weeks) but will be sure to do so next time. But at 28 weeks, maybe this won't be an issue for you... Have fun!!
