Nursery/Space Heaters

So does anyone have a space heater for there nursery? We want a cost effective on, something that puts out the heat but won't run our bill up! Any suggestions?

Re: Nursery/Space Heaters

  • Maybe it's because I'm such a nervous Nelly, but I personally wouldn't be comfortable having any kind of heater in my baby's room. Too many horror stories in my opinion!

  • You know I was worried at first but with MI winters and living an a older house it's kind of a most lol... I found a ton with tip over safety features. I just don't know which one!
  • I think I read somewhere when I was pregnant with DS that a room that is too warm increases the risk of SIDS...maybe just look into that before buying one. Perhaps you can get one with a thermostat so it doesn't get overly hot because you can always add more clothes to the baby, but you can't take off layers that aren't there :) also we live in a 100+ year old farm house in ontario and our bedroom is definitely on the cooler side and we found DS was a good temperature in a sleeper with a hat and swaddled. We also ran a ceiling fan all year round with a humidifier because our house is heated with wood and it gets really dry.
  • I have an Eden Pure space heater that I love! Doesn't increase the bill too much and the sides don't get hot in case you have other lo's
  • We use Bionaire electrics in the rooms above the garage. They have sensors and remotes and automatic shut-off features.
  • We also have an Eden Pure. We used it in our sons room at our old house because his room was freezing. You can regulate the temp and it put off a nice humming noise that helped him sleep. No part of this heater gets hot and there aren't any coils, it blows warm air.

  • No, there's a vent on Zoe's wall that blows out heat. (she's in our room right now, though, in bassinet- but we have the same.. a vent on wall that blows out the heat).

I wouldn't get a space heater, I don't think. I'm kinda afraid of them, and I'm not an overly nervous person in general. And I'm sure 99.99% of the time it would be fine to have one. But a few stories stick out to me that made me nervous. So personally, I wouldn't.

  • We have space heaters in our house too, and I think there are ones that are safer than others.  However, you do need to watch that the room does not get overly warm, since that can increase the risk of SIDS. If I remember correctly, they told us the temperature should always be between 68-72F for a baby.

  • I forget which country it is, maybe Greenland or Sweden? They put the babies outside in the winter for their naps. They're bundled, but it's the funniest thing. They've been doing it for centuries. I used to take those hospital hats home and let them sleep in that, plus being swaddled and they were fine. We live in the Dakotas.
  • Okay thank you everyone for your wondefil advise! We defaintly need some source of heat on the nursery since it does stuggle to maintain a warm temp. I will defaintly ask my doctor though about SIDS tomorrow and see what he says!

  • No suggestion on space heater, but if I had one or concerns about the temperature in baby's room, I know there are several monitors that also track temperature and can sound an alarm if it gets too hot or too cold. Might be worth considering, regardless of the space heater?

Random pop in regarding the degrees, in CA during the summer it gets hot like 90 at night sometimes and babies just sleep in regular PJs... So how does that effect the SIDS degree thing? Cause I can tell ya now that my ac is never under 75... (Hopefuly this doesn't come off asshole-ish)

I also wanted to buy a space heater cause I'm freezing as I type and my house stays cold. The heater overheats my house or gives it a weird burning smell so I hardly turn it on. I just layer or use blankets but in Jan/Feb it gets really cold (at least to us!).
  • @Britt1406-  I had the opposite reaction- 68-72 C sounds really hot to me.  We keep our place at 68 during the day and ~60-62 at night (depending on if DH or I sets the thermostat, he likes it warmer).  The other night he forgot to turn it down and I was up super hot in the middle of the night with it at 68.  I'm going to ask our Pedi about it so we can make sure LO is ok but I'm able to sleep also.

That seems so cold to me!
Cold? lol.. isn't that a normal temperature for most?
We keep ours set at 69 in the winter! 72 is insane to me. I would ROAST. Not to mention my bill would be through the roof.

This is how I know I would never make it any more north than I am now! We have our heat on 74 in the winter and I still wear full pj's and blankets and keep a space heater in the bedroom because the vent is partially blocked or something. In the summer we keep it on 78 with fans on, I also like to wear less clothes in summer. I have slowly acclimated DH to these temps, thank goodness, but I guess that's too warm for baby?

  • In the winter my heat is set at 58 when we are not home or sleeping and 62 when we are up and about.  The average temperature upstairs in my house is 59 degrees.  I will increase the temperature a little bit when the baby comes but not too high - I hate to sweat!

In the summer, my a/c is set for 72 when we are not home and 68 when we are.

You all would freeze in my house!

I probably would freeze at 62 in the day. That's a bit cold for me. I did grow up in Hawaii, after all ;)  But the upstate NY winters have made me adjust very quickly to the cold.  And Canada definitely will. My H would prefer 67/68 but we compromise at 69.   However, we DO completely turn OFF the heat at night when we sleep... it drops to maybe 62 or so.  And we have it timed to come on around 5am. We have very small bedrooms and the heat kinda "stays in" there. I would imagine it doesn't bother Zoe since she screams when I try to swaddle or put socks on her ;)

The thought of over 70 makes my skin crawl lol.. that's too warm in the winter for me in the house.

  • I'm in the minority here and have had a space heater with DD since we brought her home. (First in our room when she was in the bassinet then in her nursery when she transitioned to the crib at 12 weeks.)
We have an older, poorly insulated house. We have the automatic temperature shut off at 70. Some days when we turn it on, it's 64 in her room even with the thermostat set at 67.
