Maternity Leave Plan

I know this had been discusses somewhere else in the board but my search has failed me.  I am currently looking into writing up my maternity leave proposal but have no clue where to start!  I am not covered under FMLA as I am my bosses only employee.  I know when I sit down to meet with him he will give me basically anything I want but I am unsure as to what I need to put in there.  I live in Connecticut and was trying to look up there laws, it looks like they follow just FMLA.

Heres what I know:

  • minimum 6 weeks off maxium 12 weeks
  • Leave will start the Wednesday after he gets back from PR (around February 25th)
  • If not back from leave at time of conference in April, will still attend
  • when returning to work, start off once a week and working from home the rest of the week for at least 2-4 weeks

I feel like I should have more in there or have more set up in place?  Any advice would be great!  Thank you in advance!

Re: Maternity Leave Plan

  • Have you figured out how much time off you can afford to take off (financially)?  I'd use that as a starting point for your plans.

While I work for a larger office, I'm also not covered by FMLA, and my boss is fairly dependent upon me (which sounds like it may be similar to your situation).  In my case, my boss was way more receptive to 12 weeks taken off as 8 weeks completely out of the office and 8 weeks part-time (and bringing the baby to work!) than he was to a straight-forward 12 weeks off.

I'm not sure if the conference you reference is out of town, but I'd also suggest asking that accommodations be made for the baby and a support person to travel with you if you need to travel for it.

Finally, based on your ticker, I'm guessing your due date is mid-March?  Are you sure you want to use up two weeks of leave before the baby arrives?  I'm a FTM, and may be too optimistic about my ability to work through February (but I'm at a desk, so I think I can be equally uncomfortable at home or at work), but if you agree to six weeks of leave and end up delivering close to 42 weeks (the end of March) - you may only have 2 weeks at home full time after giving birth.  From what I hear, that could be pretty miserable (and you may have trouble finding care for a baby that young).
