Kitchen Cabinet Design Help

Ok Bs, I need some design advice. I'm having trouble deciding exactly how I want to do our kitchen. There's really nothing wrong with it other than the fact that it doesn't function quite the way I'd like. In an effort to not only save money, but to also not be wasteful I've decided to sand and stain or paint all the upper and lower cabinets along the wall. We will hire a cabinet maker to build us a new island and fix the one end of the wall cabinets that will need some reconfiguring. My layout design is decided, but I'm struggling with colours. Right now everything is a light oak and just not my style. We are keeping a casual farmhouse feel throughout the house so I would like something that keeps with that feeling but also won't be tired and dated in a few years. imageI've always loved a buttery yellow cabinet like this, but I worry that maybe it's a little too country...imageimagewhite cabinets with a pop of colour on the island. Would be less to redo if we ever decided to get rid of the colour, but I think adds a little charm.imageall white. Simple.imagea nice honey oak colour for all cabinets. Could also do white uppers and lowers and then have the island in this colour.

Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks ladies!

  • Also, the ceiling is all paneling everywhere in the house. I'm planning to paint it all white, so it will be similar to the ceiling in picture #3.

  • I like the whites better too @Bleachy14‌ but have the oaks inplay for the exact reasons you mentioned. Ahh,I'm so torn! I have the cabinet maker coming over early next week and I'd like to not sound like a flake who can't make up her mind, lol. So I'll be staring at a lot of these pictures for the next few days. Thanks for your input :). I think if I do go white I'll go for the more glazed, antique white look of the first photo. Hoping that will mask a bit of the grime in between cleanings.

  • @steamboat123‌, yes. That's one of the options (the last picture is basically how much darker I would stain them). Right now they are a few shades lighter and it just isn't my thing. Not to mention that basically every surface that isn't wall (floor, ceiling, trim, doors) is also all wood. It's just too much right now. I was fully prepared for this when we bought the place last year. We knew that it was going to take some work to get it to our taste, but the property outside just made it totally worth it. Now comes all the hard work, lol.

Oh, I missread your comment @steamboat123‌. So you are saying that the honey oak I put in the pics is what buyers are not loving? I could go darker, but I think then I would opt for white. Since I'm not a huge fan of the really really dark cabinets. How much darker are you thinking? Like an espresso?

  • @Bleachy14‌ I love the two tone look, but I'm approaching it with caution. I think the only way it will work on the long term is to go with a real old farmhouse look (like antique white uppers, wood lowers) because truthfully I think it's a trend that won't last too long.

  • I like the white with the coloured island. Or you could do like all white with a coloured tile. I prefer white kitchens to dark kitchens.
  • Thanks you guys! White with the coloured island was really my #1 choice all along (I've had that 3rd photo pinned much longer than any of the others). I wasn't sure if that was just me though. So happy that it's the favourite! I totally agree @GermaphobE‌ that the rich wood isn't really giving the overall feel I'm going for. I have a pretty specific design in mind for the house as a whole, I really hope it turns out as well as I am envisioning :)
