I didn't get one for the exact reason @beemaya83 wrote. I knew I would full-on freak if I couldn't find it. I am 33 weeks now and I have so much baby movement, I would never use a home Doppler. I am also really cheap, so that was another reason I didn't get one.
I loved mine and used it a lot before I could feel movement (9-18 weeks). Once or twice I struggled to find the heartbeat, and that really sucked. It does help if you're skinnier, so be prepared that you might have a harder time if you're fluffier. I always made sure I had an empty bladder first, to, as this made a big difference.

I started using one at about 16 weeks. I think if you start too early you might just stress your self out more. I think its great for later on in pregnancy too. Anytime my LO isn't that active I grab the doppler and listen for a little bit and it makes any worries go away for me.
I've only used mine two times, and didn't have any issues hearing the HB (once at 11 weeks, and once at 14 weeks). I thought it was a great way to reassure myself since it had been a couple weeks since we checked in on him/her I can definitely see the other side of things though.
It would have driven me crazy! My doctor had a hard time finding baby with the doppler at around 14 weeks- if she couldn't find him I can't imagine I would have better luck. I'm also in 3rd tri and like @footprint I wouldn't use it. At this point I can see baby moving through my shirt
I use mine every couple days. I'm borrowing it from a friend, I don't know if I would have bought one on my own. I love it and while it has sometimes taken awhile to find it I've always heard it for at least a couple seconds. That being said I always steel myself to not hear it and try again tomorrow.

It's definitely a personal choice. I'm SO GLAD that I have mine, but I have the will power to only use it once a week (twice a week tops when I'm feeling a little extra PGAL brain). I will say, with my last pregnancy, I was able to find it, but then wasn't able to. It was because her little heart had stopped beating I knew this time around that if I couldn't find it, I would expect the worst, but I've been able to find it every time once I started using it at 9 weeks.
I'm not sure if I will. I'm afraid if I have trouble finding the heartbeat, I will spiral back into a PTSD flashback. But it would be so reassuring, on the other hand.
It is really a personal choice. I'm an information seeker by nature and utilize that as a coping technique, so I needed it for my sanity. I also was okay early on (before 12 weeks) knowing that it was very likely that I may not find the HB and that way I wouldn't freak if I couldn't find it. I luckily was able to find it every time since 10 weeks, but I would have been ok had I not found it that early.

I see both sides, but I loved mine. I didn't use it often, just when I had a bleeding scare, or some other reason to worry but I was fortunate and able to hear the HB consistently from about 10w on. Also I used it just the other night (35w) when LO was moving less than usual.
I will also say pretty much every one of my PgAL freak outs happened in the middle of the night when the odds of getting in to see anybody would be difficult. I was able to to go downstairs, check LO, calm down and go back to bed without disturbing DH instead of being up all night panicking and worrying myself more.
