Re: Eoin

  • I love Ewan, but the H does not. We liked Owen when naming our son, but I am not fond of the popularity either. When I came across this name, I thought I may be able to persuade my H to use this spelling, which I much prefer.

  • I like Owen and think it'll be easier to pronounce.

Love it and love the nod to your Gaelic background. But I'm a huge fan of Gaelic names.

ETA: I know a woman who has a Eoin on her son's basketball team. She said some people never pronounce it correctly, but people get it for the most part. That said, we're in a pretty heavily Irish area.

ETA: I also want to throw out Iain. I have a friend whose son has that name, and I adore it. It's a Scottish version, so it would be a stronger nod to your background.

  • I don't mind Gaelic spellings but personally, I'm not familiar with them so I would never use it. If you are comfortable with them then go for it!
  • I personally would not know how to pronounce it, and I'm a teacher outside Boston, so I've seen a lot of Gaelic names. I think it's cute though... But I think you'll have to pronounce it for a lot of people

  • I love it & prefer this spelling to Owen. I say go for it :)
  • From someone who has never seen/gear the name before, I am a little confused on how it would be pronounced.
  • I associate Eoin more with an Irish version of John (along with Sean). I like the name but don't think you really get the Scottish-ness with it

(I don't know though if that would be widely known in the US though - there are some well known)

Owen (the Welsh :Owain ) along with Ewan etc are taken to not be related to the name John they just sound similar.

As others said the Scottish for John would be Iain/Ian

  • H said no to Ian/Iain. He's still on the fence with Eoin.

  • I am Irish, but I still was unfamiliar with how to pronounce it. I think you are going to run into that a lot here.
