Trouble TTC

Hi! I'm New Here!

Hello Ladies!

I've been very briefly lurking but after my appointment today decided to come out of the shadows. I'm a 24 year old nurse. My husband is 26 and works for a payroll company. We have been married over 2.5 years and together for just short of 9 years. We have one fur baby, Mozzie, who is a Caryn Terrier & Schnauzer mix.

We have been TTC for 9 months or 10 cycles. My husband's SA came back normal and healthy. I have been charting BBT, OPKs, CM, etc from the start back in April. My cycles are pretty regular except for the fact that I spot for multiple days during my luteal phase (but no doctor has seemed worried about that yet). I've also tried a few cycles on some all natural supplements for different aspects but it didn't seem to help so I stopped. My medical history includes Crohn's Disease. In December of 2006 (at the age of 16) I started a year long flare which ended in surgery to remove 10 inches of my small intestine in May of 2008. When the doctors brought me out of surgery they said that my nasty, inflamed intestine had been laying directly on my right ovary (which in turn was inflamed) but couldn't tell me at the time whether that would have any impact on my fertility. I've had concerns for awhile but my OBGYN seemed to not be.  We had our first visit with a RE today, however and he seemed pretty concerned. Due to my surgery down by my ovaries (and a fistula I also had there) he felt like there was a good possibility that my tubes were blocked and said that even if they were not blocked that he would have concerns about how good of shape they are in. He stated that if they were blocked, he really would not want to risk going in and clearing them either for fear of all the scar tissue and further damaging my intestines or the wall of my abdomen, etc.

The plan is for us to complete the HSG sometime between January 13-20. I had blood work drawn today, I want to say AMH? To see how my eggs would respond to stimulation medications. On the day he does the HSG he said he would give me answers immediately and then take us upstairs to discuss the plan. If the tubes are blocked: IVF. If they are open: a few rounds of meds followed by IVF if that fails.

Today has been super overwhelming, but I am glad to have a plan in place and to be making progress. I am scared of IVF but that is a post for a different day.

Looking forward to getting to know you all!

  • Welcome! Sorry you had an idiot OB, but glad to hear that you've found your way to an RE. I hope that the HSG gives you some answers so you have a plan moving forward.
  • Welcome. I am glad you are seeing an RE now. I have been amazed at how differently REs and OBGYNs view fertility.

  • Welcome! Though I'm sorry you have to be here.

I'm a Crohny, too. ;) No surgery yet, though - so the RE gave me a laparoscopy (as endometriosis was indicated), and was able to remove adhesions that had formed and connected the ovary to the intestine. Luckily my HSG showed that tubes were clear. However, the RE feels that inflammation related to diseases like Crohn's can can lead to a hostile pelvic environment for eggs, but one that can be bypassed by IVF.

I hope you have a clear HSG, or at least one clear tube to give you some options! (Sometimes one blocked tube creates a hostile environment on its own, but sometimes a BFP is possible to come by.) Good luck with the testing phase! Hopefully you will find some clear (and fixable) answers. :)

  • Welcome to 3T :)  You're not the only poster here with Crohn's, I've noticed, so you will be in good company.

I'm so sorry your OB blew off any concerns, and very glad you got to an RE relatively quickly.  OBs must have a special med school rotation in blowing off concerns.

Mozzie is adorable, and must be a little ball of energy, going by those breeds!

I'm not the only one with Crohns?? I may be totally excited by this!

I went on a little rant about how no one cared about my justified concerns with my tubes until him who had concerns right away. He loosely went in to defend them by saying something about how if you follow what the textbook tells you about TTC  then they say that etc. So lame! Not everyone is textbook!

Mozzie is a great mixture of fun energy who loves to run and play and the guy who will nap in your lap with a blanket all Saturday long!

I am so intrigued! Thanks for the info.  I will have to do some more research on that.

Glad to have a fellow Chrony!

    ...LO mentioned...

Welcome! Hope it doesn't get to IVF but if it does, don't be scared! Your RE seems to be on top of things and finding an RE that you feel you can relate to is super important. I went through 3 before I finally decided on one. I do have one DS and he is a product of IVF. While it is no walk in the park, I promise you it's worth it. Glad your RE already has a plan in place. :)
  • Welcome in sorry you had to join. I'm 24 also and just starting my process for diagnosis. All the women here are amazing and welcoming.
  • ...LO mentioned...

I was 23 when I started the diagnostic process and 24 when I did IVF and had my DS. Hoping that by some miracle we can resort to something a bit less invasive and inexpensive this go around.
  • Hi and Welcome! I am sorry you have to be here but glad you found us. It sounds like your RE is experienced and puts you on the right protocol. HSG for some is relatively painless and others have cramping/discomfort/pain. Hoping everything turns out good and you can start treatment.
