Why are boys names so difficult

My husband and I go in to find out if we're having a boy or girl on Jan. 19th....that day can't come soon enough!  We've really started tossing around name ideas and just trying to get a few ideas in mind.  Once we know for sure what we're having, we'll start seriously narrowing down our selections and start using them just to see which one flows and comes more naturally to us.  Girls names have been so easy.  We have 4-5 full names picked out but definitely have 1 that is our favorite.  Boys on the other hand have been so difficult!  We're pretty traditional but don't want to go with average names like Ryan, Michael, Matthew, etc.  We're definitely into the more popular names of today but it has still been a challenge to come up with something that seems fitting for our little family.  Also, my husband hates any names that end with xon or son such as Jackson, Braxton, Braedon, etc. which I happen to like.  I've been going through the Baby Names page on this site and it is just such a challenge!

Re: Why are boys names so difficult

  • I have no advice but boys names have been harder for us too! We have like 8 girls names we like, but we can only agree on Adrian for a boy (Team Green), and we're not necessarily crazy about that. We're looking for names that work in both English and Spanish, so that may be more limiting for boys names too.

  • This sounds exactly like me a my husband (especially the part about your husband hating names with xon and son endings). I think our front runner right now is Elliott, but we still can't decide!

  • Same. I love our girl name choices, but the boy name choices...we just can't decide. We have decided to give up trying on names until after my a/s on the 7th. Saves me a headache!
  • I wonder what it is with boy names?!  Out of all of the naming posts, I feel that we all have difficulty picking out the boys names.  I tend to go for Carter, Connor and Owen but my husband doesn't like any of those so we also have pretty much just stopped thinking about boys names until our anatomy scan.  I'm the only one in the office today and it's so quiet so I started trying to search for more names and I just keep hitting the same wall of frustration!
  • We instantly had a boy name and found out it was a girl. Took us quite awhile to find one we both liked after we found out the sex. I think it's different for each couple :)
  • We've never had a girl name.  We had a tough time with girls for our last pregnancy, so we just quit and decided we would worry about it at the hospital if we had to.  I packed the books and everything.

This time - same thing again.  We have a few boy names.  Not even 1 girl thought.

It is the 1 and only reason we might open the envelope in the safe ;)

  • We had our girls name picked out and ITS A BOY! So back to the drawing board!
  • H and I can come up with beautiful girl names all day, but we get stuck with boys too.

Luckily we had two girls. Team green, so we'll see about this one!

  • Try picking out 3 boy names! This third boy will hopefully be named before making it to kindergarten. Boy #2 wasn't named until just before we left the hospital.

My two boys are getting a surprise May 2015!

  • We would have had Jack picked out for a boy (my son is Jude), but my cousin just named her baby Jackson and calls him Jack. So we don't have a clue. We like Graham, Max, and Clark, but I am not completely in love with any of them the way I was my sons name. Really the only reason I am kind of hoping its a girl is because I know the naming process will be much easier.
  • @SunshyneShay - we have but a few other close relatives used some of those names or they're just not for us.  I did suggest using my husband's grandfather's name of Edward as the baby's middle name....I thought he would be thrilled with that suggestion but he really didn't seem to care either way about it.  We have a very easy yet commonly mispronounced last name so I want to keep the first name fairly short and easy.  My husband suggested a name that would allow us to shorten the name like TJ or something like that but we have several close friends who are both named Timothy John and go by TJ so I really wouldn't want to add a 3rd to the mix.  I knew names would be tough because there's always someone that you associate each name with either good or bad....I can't imagine how difficult it is for teachers!
  • Honestly I thought picking boys names were so easy. A trick I used to help my sister pick a middle name was to say it out loud. The name I have picked for my LO on the way I picked by looking up some names that are not as popular now because I don't want him to be part of a trend like my name was. Good luck
  • I have had trouble with picking names in general! We didn't have any for girls and Bentley was the only thing that sounded somewhat good to me. (I am still not 100%.) My boyfriend was dead set that the middle name would be after my father. I love my dad but there are so many Joseph's in my family. We decided to use my last name as the middle name. As of now it is Bentley James and it will probably stay because I can't come up with anymore!

I do like the idea of going back through family lineage to get name ideas. Everything old always makes a comeback so why not start a name back.
  • I have the problem of I love new names, but my boyfriend wants to name him Stephen Edward III ... He is a second and I really don't want to ... It's been a war %-(

I'm having the opposite problem, I have a great boy's name and it's a toss up for a girl's name . That's one of the reasons I'm sure this one is a girl. Lol

My three boys are Kristopher Sean, Tristan Alexander and Seth . The one I've picked out this time is Zachary Logan.
  • We're choosing between Wilder and Thatcher for a boy right now (team green). My husband got really into finding boy names and we've developed a great list. I like the idea @Starbuck128 has - look at older names lists, classic+not too popular sounds like what you're going for.

  • My problem is that with 3 boys already, I've used up my favs!

We have a Noah, Nick, and Eli.

I'm really struggling to name this one!

We've tossed around leo ryan (means little lion king.. cue the Aww factor) but it doesn't flow right for me..
    Or.. Just ryan.. or leo

Also on the list is calvin, Emmett, felix, or jason. Others made the list too but dh only gives an approval by saying "that's fine" which drives me nuts!

I don't LOVE any name so far and its really annoying.

  • After finding out I was having twins I thought for sure one was a girl-as it runs in the family. Nope! 2 boys with a loooong list of girls names.

Whenever I share the very few names I have with family and/or friends, some voice they're negative opinions...If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all!
  • We're having a girl which i'm SO happy about because I was stuck stuck stuck on boys names! DS #1 is named Rowan which I love, and I adored the name Riley if we were having another boy but DH vetoed that and said it was a girls name (I argued that it was unisex, just like Rowan is).

Have you tried looking at Nameberry? I always saw a lot of cute names on there.

  • Since we are having a girl, I am handing out boy names like candy:
    Alexander
    Dexter
    Xavier
    Zachary (or Zachariah)
Beau (this was my husband's wild card choice )

  • Ha! I was hoping for a girl because my husband's choices for boy names were so ridiculous. (Super hero names and such). But...we found out we're having a boy so now I'm having the hardest time coming up with anything! Go figure.

  • We are having a boy and I'm finding it extremely hard to pick out a name. My DH and I do not like names that each other like. DH currently refers to the baby as Fernando. I think he's joking and doesn't really want to name him that. He also likes Winston. I am loving the name Asher, so I was thinking of Asher Winston. Good luck to you!
  • We don't know what we are having until the 5th and my first child was easy to name because he is a Jr. But now picking out a boy name as well as a girl name is making it really difficult because my son wants to name the baby. Haha eventually we will figure it out but we're just waiting for the ultrasound before we stress ourselves out.
  • We're also having a boy and we too are struggling to come up with a good name that will stick .. My ideas are : Kyan, Declan, Jaryd, Adam.... But not decided on any...
  • We are in the same boat.  We a definite girl name... but so far have agreed on NONE for boys.  Oh well.  We find out Friday and will go from there.
