Hello ladies - intro/new to board

I thought I'd introduce myself as I'm new to the board and am looking forward to getting to know you. I'm 32 and my DH is 33. We have been married for 7 years and are finally in a place where we're ready for a family. We began trying to conceive this fall and got our BFP on 11/27 (Thanksgiving day!). Things seemed to be going well until our first appt on 12/22 (7w3d) when the ultrasound indicated an empty gestational sac measuring at 6w1d. Dr and ultrasound tech initially tried to say my dates must be off but I have been tracking for 22 cycles and know my body. After explaining this, the dr admitted that she isn't optimistic and its likely a blighted ovum. I'm scheduled for a 2nd ultrasound this Friday 1/2 (9w0d based on LMP) to confirm. Today I started having light spotting so I'm guessing my body is finally figuring out what is going on. I'm not sure whether to wait for a natural miscarriage or just do a D&C and get it over with. Any advice would be much appreciated... Regardless, I hope to be off the bench soon and officially joining you all in TTCAL. It seems like a great community and I wish you all well.

Edited for typo

I also wanted to say that I'm sorry my avatar is still related to pregnancy. I've tried to change it several times and can't seem to get my new picture to show up. Ugh. I'll keep trying and I don't mean to upset anyone.

Okay finally got it to save, after pressing the save button about 20 times. Yikes!

  • So sorry for your loss.
  • I just relised my avatar is pregnancy related too im sorry ladies I'll get onto changing it
  • Sorry for your loss. I have had one natural miscarriage, but my other losses were all mmc. I tried allowing my body to do its thing, but that just doesn't seem to happen for me.
I'd definitely elect for a d&c again, if needed.

  • I'm so sorry for your loss. I also had a blighted ovum and had my d&c on Dec 5. I opted for the D&c because when I went for my first ultrasound, my gestational sac was measuring 8 weeks and I had no symptoms of my body reacting to it. My HCG levels were 81,500. I have a feeling is still be pregnant with an empty gestational sac if I hadn't had the surgery. I can't say anything about a natural mc since I haven't been through that.

Fx for good news at the follow up. But if not, I'm so sorry!!!

  • I'm so sorry for your loss. Welcome, I hope that you find comfort here.

Many of us on the board have had both natural MCs and D&Cs. While there anecdotes in support of/against both paths, this really is a decision for you to make with your doctor. I hate that you're facing this and wish you peace in this process.
  • I'm very sorry for your loss. I can't really offer any advice for natural m/c vs d&c, but I wish you peace in whatever path you choose.

I'm sorry for the loss *hug*

It's also hard for me to give advice, all 3 of mine were natural.

There is a good sticky on the miscarriage/loss board called advice and experience. It's a good place to read others experiences for both.

    I wish you luck.

I am not sure how to say this without getting a "solicitation" warning so I guess I just say that I am not longer active on THIS site.

  • I also had a d&c after BO. It brought much closure to me, but I think you have to do what you feel is best! Sorry for your loss
  • I'm so sorry for your loss.
With my first loss, it happened naturally at 6 weeks. My second loss was discovered at my 9 week u/s. It took about 3 weeks for me to get my d&c (insurance issues). I was hoping that my body would just handle it naturally, but it never happened. I spotted a couple of times, but that's it:/ It's just such a personal decision. I hope you end up having peace in whatever decision you make.

  • Welcome to the board.  I am so sorry for your loss.  Like others have said, whether or not to have a d&c is a personal decision that you will need to make with your doctor and spouse.  I had two missed miscarriages and ended up with a d&c both times, and I am very comfortable with my decisions.  I'd be happy to talk to you in more detail if you think that would be helpful.  (((hugs)))

  • I'm sorry for your loss, but welcome to the board.

I've had a D&C with both of my losses. I started miscarrying naturally with my second, but I was bleeding for about two weeks before my D&C and I would have most likely needed one anyway, given how much was still there.

It's really what you're most comfortable with. Yes, with the D&C, you do get it over with, but it's still surgery and there are risks.

There's also the pill as an option, Cytotec or Misoprostol, but I've heard horror stories about using them.

Has your doctor tested your beta or progesterone levels?

  • So sorry for your loss.  Welcome.

I had a MMC and while my body kind of caught on to what was happening (spotting and major cramping) the constant pain was too much for me.  I suppose it was attempted contractions by my body to progress with a natural mc, but it didn't progress quickly in my case and I ended up doing a D&C a week after everything started.  Talk with your doctor on Friday.  I don't think there is a right or wrong answer.  It is a matter of what is best for you.

  • I'm sorry for what you're going through. I have had 3 natural miscarriages and 1 D&C. I had a really bad experience with my D&C where I ended up having retained tissue afterward and had to have a second surgery to get it out. My hormones & cycles were messed up for months afterward. However, I think my experience is in the minority. I don't mean to scare you, but I really did not consider that that would be a possibility when I went in for the D&C and my doctors made it sound like it was so rare for anything to not go perfectly.

The latest of my 3 natural losses was at 7w2d. There was a lot of blood and some mild cramping, but it wasn't terribly painful. However, I know women on this board who have had awful experiences with natural miscarriages, so I really think it depends on the person and the pregnancy.

We're here for you either way.

  • I'm so sorry for your loss. This past year I had one D&C and another natural mc (induced with cytotec). Like other ladies have said, each experience can be so different. The d&c offered instant closure, which I appreciated.

My natural loss seemed to go on forever (it took 50 days for my first period, and I was monitored weekly via blood draws and u/s for leftover tissue and slow dropping levels).

  • Thank you all so much for the warm welcome and for sharing your experiences with me. The spotting has gotten heavier and I'm starting to feel more at peace with acknowledging that we have lost our first little one. I have a follow up ultrasound on Friday with a tech but won't see an OB until next Tuesday so I have time to think about what path to choose. I realize it's a personal decision and there are pros and cons to both. I'm scared about both options and am just hoping to have closure and get back to a normal cycle soon (may be wishful thinking I realize). Thank you again for the support.

  • I am sorry for your loss.

There is a thread on the miscarriage board called "advice and experience" that many people have shared their experiences, natural, surgical or medicated. It might help you become more aware of the pros and cons of all of the options.

It is a tough choice nobody should have to make. Hugs.
