How do you know if your milk supply is decreasing?

Typically when I pump I usually get 4-5 oz. But lately I have only been getting 2-3. Does this mean my milk is decreasing? He is putting out plenty of wet diapers (although I read thats not a clear signal he is getting enough). The past week he has wanted to eat every 2 hrs and he has started to suck on his hands a bit. How do I know if its decreasing? He seems content after eating he either refuses or pulls himself off.

EDIT: the original post looked like I was typing and drinking.

Kellymom says this is completely normal for a mom that is BF. I wouldn't worry too much. I would assume your supply just levelled out to where it should be. And I'm assuming your LO is hungrier due to a growth spurt. If he's getting enough poopy and wet diapers I wouldn't worry too much.

  • The longer you breastfeed the more accurate the amount of milk you produce will be to meet your LO's needs. Sounds like right now you have an over supply and it is just evening out like PP said. Babies will go through periods where they will eat more frequently as well so as long as LO has enough wet and poopy diapers there is no need to worry :) Especially if he is content after feedings.
  • Perfect timing on this, I was just wondering myself!  I was getting 4-5+ oz per pumping session and the past two days it's been 3-4.  I was wondering if I hurt my supply by letting him have a bottle without pumping a few times when we were traveling through Christmas.
