anyone have any experience with amniocentesis?

Sorry if this post seems like a AW I'm really just looking for some advice from anyone who may have experienced an amniocentesis. I'm currently on day 9 of my L&D stay and plan is to keep me here until delivery. The goal is 37 weeks which is Jan 15th. They want to first do the amnio to test baby's lung maturity before taking me up for surgery/delivery. I'm a bit nervous about the procedure itself and hoping someone here can share their story to relieve some of my worry. I'm also curious to see if anyone knows the odds of his lungs being mature at that gestational age without steriods. I know with all my complications and being high risk doctors want him out sooner then later to avoid still birth so I guess I need to find out from them what the plan would be if the test comes back not mature. Anyhow anyone else in the same boat or have been through this before?

Re: anyone have any experience with amniocentesis?

  • My water broke at 37 weeks with my son. He had some trouble breathing after he was born, but it was minimal. He spent about 2 hours in the special care nursery getting oxygen, but he was fine. After the 2 hours in the special care nursery, he was back in the room with me and didn't have any more issues.

Sorry I can't give you any advice on the amnio but my son was fine at 37. Fingers crossed that you make it until then.

Thank you, everyone tells me that boys lungs develope slower then girls. Not sure how true that is, but im just praying we get mature results from the amnio and deliver him safely the same day. Having a high risk pregnancy is stressful :(
  • I had an amnio at 20 weeks with my first pregnancy. I was scared of it, but in all honesty it wasn't that bad. Mostly just felt pressure and it was the most uncomfortable as it came out. However, I'm not sure how the feeling would vary (if any) because you're farther along than I was.

My biggest fear really with the amnio was the risk associated with it, but I had no complications from it and since you're in the hospital I'm sure you'll be well monitored.

  • No experience with the amnio but my son was born at 36w exactly (water broke, no steroids or anything) and other than some mild jaundice he was totally fine. No lung issues or NICU stay. FX that everything looks okay for your little guy!

  • @lelly0086‌ For what it is worth, my daughter was born at 37 weeks as well and she was just fine without any help. Boys do seems to struggle a little more, but I think at 37 he should be okay even if he has to have some interventions/help from the doctors. There have been quite a few ladies on here who have had their babies well before 37 weeks and the babies are doing okay. Good luck!
  • NO amnio experience, but my 2nd son was born at 36 weeks after my water broke on its own, and came out screaming and yelling like it was his job! There are the steroid shots, betamethasone, that the docs will give if they are worried you will have preterm labor. good luck and prayers that your man comes out strong and loud!!!!

  • I guess I'm wondering what's the point? Will the results change their plan about the 37 weeks? If the results show they are mature would they move up delivery date? If yes, then probably good to do. If no, then just stick with the steroids and have the nicu team ready to go.

  • No experience but why can't they give you the steroid shots anyway, especially if 37w is the goal? Seems like they only can help.

  • I had an amnio reduction at 29weeks with twins to try and equalize amnio levels between the twins (they had TTTS). They actually poked me on two separate occasions and in total took out over 2 liters of fluid so I had the needle in my belly for quite a long time. I had contracted a few times which was really uncomfortable but they have the ultrasound there on baby the entire time. The needle they used had a plastic end so it wouldn't have really poked her, she even reached for it at one point! It leaves your belly a little sore and a bruise but I wouldn't be scared OP, baby should be a-okay.

  • I cant really tell you much about the amnio. I havent had mine done yet but I can say I had both my sons at 37 weeks and they were fine. No breathing issues or anything
  • Because I'm a type 1 diabetic they don't want to do steroids unless absolutely necessary. So I'm guessing that if the results come back not mature they will attempt it but they don't want to. Apparently the steriods make my blood sugars go sky high which could be dangerous for the baby. But I'm still waiting to see my actual doctor tomorrow to find out what they plan to do if they don't get mature results from the amnio.
  • Could be wrong but I think Kia dealt with a similar issue before her twins were born and I seem to recall her getting extra insulin to counteract. I tried to tag her...but obviously I suck.

  • I don't have experience with amnios but my twins were born at 36w5d so very close to 37w... one had no trouble breathing and one did. They were born early due to IUGR and a growth discordance. The smaller baby was the one that had no trouble breathing, as expected, because he was stressed in utero which caused his lungs to mature faster. The bigger baby was not stressed so his lungs did not mature early and he had to go to the NICU for 26 hours.
