Lightning Crotch

Can someone describe your lightning crotch feeling? Is it a consistent thing like your BH or contractions?

I have never had this feeling with my DD and I'm about to give in a call my midwife. All day I have been having contractions (nothing regular) and this intense pressure on my cervix. Sometimes I can feel baby move right before I get the sensation. This has been going for about a week now and today I can't even take more then a couple steps before it has me doubled over. I can't stretch up without feeling it. Just wondering if it's normal and means he is dropping and getting into position or something else.

  • You should call your midwife. It could all be contractions. Lightening crotch is something different. It's a sharp, shooting, stabbing pain that shoots down your crotch and only lasts a couple seconds.

Ditto this. Lightening crotch for me feels like someone is scraping my vagina with a bristled brush. It hurts but goes away quickly.

  • Thanks ladies. It is a brief feeling but I get it quite often. They have subsided for the night from what I can tell so I think I will be ok. I may text the midwife tomorrow just to ask her opinion. I'm planning a home birth a legally can't stay home until I have hit 37 weeks. That's not until January 7th so I'm trying to stay blissfully naive until then. I do appreciate the input though

  • Last night I got one so bad that it caused my right leg to buckle and give out on me. Luckily I was standing next to DH when it happened and he caught me. She must have hit a nerve or something, it was NOT fun!

  • I have been getting more and more cervix pressure like what you're describing, and I didn't have anything like it with my DS either. I described it to my OB at my last appointment and she said (basically), "yup, that sounds sucky, but it's basically just your LO getting your cervix ready for you". Yay.

The pressure is the worst when she "spins" - she is head down, but rotates back and forth, like she's nestling in as far down as she can go. A couple days ago it was so bad I was on the couch for most of the afternoon.

I find her spinning, and my contractions, stop when I lie down. Does that help for you?

(I'm also not saying you shouldn't talk to your doctor, but I can commiserate.)
  • Exactly that @shannjohnston‌! I'm glad I'm not alone.

I'm kind of curious about the same thing. This Is My 3rd baby and the first time I have experienced lightning crotch along with this horrid constant pressure! I was walking in Lowes and had severe pressure every step I took, then I actually had to stop and sit because I seriously thought I was going to give birth in the paint isle. About 15 mins after sitting there I was able to get up and walk to the car. I went home and laid on the couch and the pain went away for the most Part. I still get very bad pressure and plan to talk you my ob at my appointment on wednesday.
