2nd Trimester

medical

This is my first pregnancy, and the other day I was standing talking to a friend and all of a sudden I got very light headed. My eyes couldn't concentrate and it's like I was seeing stars, my ears started ringing and I started sweating badly, I had to hold onto a wall to stay up. I've never had anything like this happen, so I just wanted some input from others .

Does this look like a doctors office?

  • Just so you guys know, I called my doctors office, 6 times in a matter of 2 days and left a voice mail. Since I hadn't heard back I just thought I would ask if someone has experienced it before.
  • This happens to me if I go too long without eating.  Make sure you are eating every 2-3 hours and drink lots of water.  I would be VERY upset if my doctor hadn't gotten back to me.
  • I have low blood pressure, and I get the symptoms you describe when I've been extremely tired or stressed. The next step, for me, is passing out. Check with your doctor!
  • I had this happen to me at least 3 times in my first trimester. Some women are prone to dizzy spells and fainting in pregnancy due to drops in blood pressure or hypoglycemia. It always happened to me if I had been standing a long time.

  • If you called your doctor and they didn't respond, you should probably be concerned about that. When you do get through to talk to them about feeling lightheaded, you should also find out why it took them so long to respond.
In regards to the lightheadedness, this has happened to me several times throughout 2nd tri. I have low blood pressure to begin with and it continues to be low during pregnancy. When I talked with my midwife, she told me to be careful about getting up too fast and to sit down if I felt I was getting dizzy. Eating and drinking throughout the day can help, and definitely avoid long, hot showers.

  • Hot showers did this to me a few times in first trimester. I also felt like I was going to pass out every morning when I got out of bed, it would pass quickly though. I figured it was low blood pressure.

I'd be concerned that my doctor or a nurse atleast hadn't call me back by now though.
  • Thank you ladies. I called the nurses line, but tomorrow I plan on trying their general line. I have already switched doctors once, but if I don't get what I need I will switch again. I appreciate your responses.

That sucks that they aren't calling you back.

Make sure you're eating enough, same thing happened to me in target back in august. I hadn't eaten enough for breakfast and I had to lay down on the floor in an aisle to get the feeling to go away. Made me break out in a cold sweat, I was nauseous, ringing in my ears, blacking out, it's scary. Most likely a hypoglycemic episode.

Yes. Stay hydrated & eat protein + sugar every 3-4 hours.

  • I did hear about women fainting during pregnancy. Your doctor would need to get it checked and the sooner the better. There could be a sign of a low blood pressure, low blood sugar levels or iron. I am sure there are other reasons for feeling light headed though. A thorough blood work test would help pin point what is going on.
  • My guesses would be for low blood sugar or low blood pressure. Try keeping a few snacks in your purse or glucose tablets. Eat or take 4 glucose tablets when you feel poorly, and if you feel better in 15 minutes it was low blood sugar.
