MOTN eyes closed waking up crying

I apologize if this has been covered, I searched and found nothing. Please direct me.

Short version- will do long if needed

DD will be 5 months on Jan3 she has always slept 10-12 hours at night after she transitioned out of the swaddle.

The past 4 nights she has been waking up with her eyes closed and crying like she's awake. Has anyone experienced this? It is either 8 hours after she's gone to bed or 6 and a half hours. I know STTN is typically around these times but after sleeping for long stretches for so long would it all the sudden change?

Does it sound like sleep regression?

Help please!!

Re: MOTN eyes closed waking up crying

  • My girl does this night or day. I just talk to her and tell her to open her eyes. Stoke her cheeks and when she does she just realizes where she is and closes her eyes and goes back to sleep. Sometimes she doesn't she just stares at me.

  • Yup happens with mine. We were leaving her for 5-10 min and seeing if she would put herself to sleep but she eventually would wake up. I started sending my husband in there and he rubs her belly and shushes until she is still/quiet again. Just have to catch it early and I think having DH go in there instead of me helps (I breastfeed). Took us way too long to figure this out and now we feel silly!
  • We try the "magic pat" where we pat his chest softly and then when he calms (after a few minutes), I let up gradually. It usually works but only if his eyes are still closed.

  • We have tried the "magic pat" and ahe just screams more. I an EBF so DH will try and calm her down only screams more. It almost seems like night terrors but I don't know if it's to soon for those. We talk to her and try and calm her down so it seems to help.

Hoping this is just a phase.

  • My little guy does this sometimes, I try to soothe in bed but sometimes I just pick up, sing a little and put him back down.
  • Our DD was doing this a couple of weeks ago and has stopped.  It may have corresponded to some of her teething.  I'm not entirely sure, but I do know it stopped at least for now.
  • Resurrecting this thread because it happened to us last night for the first time. Anyone think it might be baby's way of having a nightmare? It was so strange to see him "sleeping" but crying.

  • This is happening to us too for the passed 3 nights. Has anyone found out exactly what was going on?
  • My little man doesn't open his eyes while crying unless I roll him over or pick him up, but he does shake his head back and forth while crying (with eyes closed) and rolls a lot too.
  • LO was doing this a few nights in December but then it stopped. I kind of figured it was night terrors because he would absolutely scream until I got him on the boob or finally got him to wake up, but for at least the first minute or two he wouldn't open his eyes at all. I mentioned it to the pedi at his apt, but there is nothing you can do for bad dreams of course. =(
