TTC After a Loss

AWish: Need suggestions for anniversary trip!

So my husband and I are chatting about our anniversary, because that's the logical thing to do at almost 1 am.
I'm a huge planner.  If I'm not planning something, I go a little crazy.  So before the holidays, that's easy.  Holiday planning.  But once Christmas is over I get in a funk until I'm able to plan our anniversary trip.

We go on a trip every year.  Our first anniversary we went to Deep Creek Lake at a B&B, which we can't do anymore since I doubt I'd be able to eat the delightful breakfast that is usually provided.  Our second and third we went on cruises which we loved but think is outside our price range this time.  For our fourth we went on a camping trip to Harpers Ferry (in the winter with snow on the ground!) and went hiking and biking all around the area.
With our fifth coming up in February we would like to do something more substantial than camping but less pricey than cruising.  We thought about the Poconos, but for the price we might as well cruise.

The trip will likely be delayed until March because of work.
So, knowing I'm near DC and wanting to take a nice trip that is far enough away but not flying distance, does anyone have suggestions for me?
I should add two things.  One, I'm drunk.  Two, my husband suggested asking "My ladies."
We met in middle school. We got married 15 years later in a February blizzard of 2010.

OOOH fun!!! Our anniversary is in Feb as well!! Hmmmm - so many options...I don't know what to suggest really LOL!! You guys have done a lot of traveling already! We've gone camping at Fairy Stone for our first anniversary- isn't winter camping fun?! Loved it. How about a romantic getaway to NYC? I know Feb/March is difficult to plan for weather-wise but we did it before & it worked out! ;)

Oh yeah, I love winter camping actually! Unfortunately last we did it it dropped into the teens and our tent was massive so our body heat wasn't doing a good job of heating it! It was a difficult few nights!
February is extremely hard to predict weather wise. Shoot, we got married right after a blizzard. The last time it had snowed that bad in our area i was a teenager!

Thanks for the suggestions so far!

Did you guys get married locally in Feb? We did a semi-elopement in Feb to HI and did a Thai ceremony for my folks in Silver Spring in June. Winter weddings are gorgeous but COLD!!! :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:
Yes, we got married in souther maryland in February of 2010. Snow up to my knees! It made for some pretty pictures.

  • How far is too far for a road trip? Would you consider a national park adjacent vacation rental?

A few years ago we rented a cabin along the border to the Great Smoky Mountains NP. In the woods, totally private, hot tub under the stars, easy access to the park for day hikes, kitchen to deal with our own food (and an easy drive into town if we wanted to go out), and remarkably cheaper than a hotel. I've heard people do this at Shenandoah, too.

    Just an idea... https://www.homeaway.com/vacation-rental/p3816786

It has a hot tub on the upper deck and a fireplace. <insert blushing smiley>

  • What about somewhere on the shore, like Rehoboth or Bethany or Ocean City? My boss has a place in Rehoboth and loves going off season when it's not crowded. You could walk along the beach and probably get a great deal on a rental.

NYC would also be a good option, if you'd like to visit a city. You could do all the standard tourist stuff in NY - see a show, walk around Times Square, check out the Highline, etc.

  • We went to Deep Creek for our first anniversary!
I just visited family in Winchester VA. I love it there because of the cute down town area, but I dont know what else there is to do.
Near there (northern VA area...I think?) Is a town with the name "springs" in it. Please forgive my non working brain at the moment and I know a partial name isn't helpful, but it's pretty well known for having a hot spring
Also, not sure how far away this is for you, but Google "Ohiopyle, PA"
It's a cute town with shopping, outdoor activities. There are also some Frank Lloyd Wright homes nearby, most notably Falling Water

  • Wow, great suggestions!
We unfortunately got into an argument about this subject before going to sleep last night.
I got upset because we had always intended on going back to Niagara Falls every five years because we went there for our honeymoon.  But when we made that plan our vision of how that trip would look is very different than how it would actually look after everything that has happened the past five years, if you guys know what I mean, which I'm guessing you do.  So that's no on the table anymore because I don't think we can deal with it.
It turned into an argument because I brought up the elephant in the room.  It was a mess and we don't usually argue like that.

But this morning we were fine and got to talking about our lives in general and what else we want out of life should we not get the thing we want most, and what we want are experiences.  Adventures.

So since we are on a pretty strict budget and like to be fairly active, we are going to bike the C&O canal in March for our anniversary trip!  Not relaxing, not particularly romantic, but it's something that we've been wanting to do for a while but things always got in the way.

This was exactly what i was thinking! Great minds!

  • Sorry you argued. Damn that elephant :(

What you're going to do sounds fun though !
I am not sure how to say this without getting a "solicitation" warning so I guess I just say that I am not longer active on THIS site.

  • Im sorry you had an argument about it but glad you came to an agreement. I hear Cumberland is a great place to stay while/after biking the canal. Have fun!

Oh yeah, I used to live in Frostburg. It's so pretty up there. I think we are starting in Cumberland to get the downhill advantage. Some of the locks are brutal when going north.

I'm sorry you argued, but am glad you two were able to talk this morning. That path is supposed to be awesome!
