Rec your kiddo's bookcase.

M got a lot of books for Christmas. I really encouraged this, because reading with my mom is one of my favorite memories, and it fostered a lifelong love of reading in me. I want to get a bookcase for M, but I'm not sure the best way to go. I like the ones where the books face out in theory since it will allow M to pick her faves more easily, but I'm worried that kind wouldn't hold enough. Anyone have any insight on what has worked/ hasn't worked for you? Or, like everything else, am I overthinking this?

  • I love the kind that faces some books out and has bins underneath, but you're right that they don't hold as much. If you are handy, you can DIY book rails out if gutters or fabric and dowel rods. Then use a regular shelf with bins or baskets to hold the overflow.

  • We have this one from Target. It doesn't hold a lot but I still love it. I just stack some books beside it and put them in the bins as well.

I also noticed a much larger bookshelf that faces the books out at Toys r Us a few weeks ago. It had 4 shelves, maybe? I do love the DIY ones too. image

  • Fwiw, we just have bookcases and V has no trouble finding his books by looking at just the spine it seems. We ask for a certain book, and he'll,find it. There's also the part where he will just tear all his books off the shelf anyways. Just like he'll dump out his toy bis, or just about anything.

    Same here.
  • We just have a cheap 5 shelf bookshelf from Target. I think I got it on sale for $20 or something. The kids can't reach the top 2 shelves, so those are for pictures, keepsakes, etc. The middle two shelves are books. I keep ones with paper pages on the upper shelf for my oldest and board books on the lower shelf so my youngest can reach them. The bottom shelf has two baskets for toys. My kids very quickly learned what the spines of their favorite books looked like and DS (16 months) can find a specific one if I ask for it, and can put them back on the shelf if the ones already there aren't too out of control. We have over 100 books, so they just wouldn't fit on one of those shelves where the books face out.
  • We just ran into this problem a few weeks ago. I love the look of a wall of books facing out, but we decided that they wouldn't hold enough, plus L wouldn't be able to reach most of the books, so it wasn't worth it for us just for the look. We also have very little space so we decided to look for something that was the right height to sort of double as a nightstand. We ended up just getting 4 wood crates from Michaels and stacking them. Books are in the crates and L uses the top for his water, nightlight, and tissues, etc.
