The Flu...:/

For the past couple of weeks I have been tending to my two little ones who were diagnosed with the flu! I made it till a couple of days ago taking Tylenol and disinfecting my house....now I feel like s*** and to be honest nothing absolutely nothing is helping my aches and pains. My ob just said to use Tylenol. Are there any home remedies you ladies may know of that would help flu symptoms? Merry xmas by the way...I spent mine in bed by far the saddest Xmas ever :/

Re: The Flu...:/

  • I would've asked earlier but the lighting on my phone even irritates my eyes! :/

  • Don't have any advice but I do have sympathy!  And empathy, since I started sniffling two days ago and coughing today.  Hope you feel better soon!

  • You can't risk running a temperature. Just take the Tylenol, get lots of rest and drink lots of fluids. You could check with your doctor to see if Tamiflu would be appropriate.
  • Thank you! Back at ya! I have no shame in calling in lol rest is what I've definitely been trying to get
  • I'm sorry. No advice but definitely sympathy, as my husband spent yesterday sofa ridden with a stomach bug and now I have today.
  • Actually temperatures are only risky for pregnant women in the first tri or if it's high grade (103+) or last more than 24 hours so don't worry about that too much.Just called my doctor this week about it because I'm super sick too :( The flu itself is very dangerous for pregnant women so I would for sure call your doc and ask for tamiflu. Tylenol is fine and so is Tylenol pm which will help you rest easier! Feel better!

Continue to take Tylenol and stay really hydrated. Also, put some cold wash cloths on your neck, chest and forehead to try to help bring your temperature down. I would also call my doctor about getting a prescription for Tamiflu..but it's only effective if taken during the first 48 hours of illness. Feel better!

  • I have an appointment in Monday with him but I was under the impression that i couldn't take tamiflu. I'm just freaking out I've never been sick with my of my pregnancies.

You can definitely take Tamiflu. I would try to get a hold of an on call doctor.

  • Yeah that's what i thought and there's no telling when i actually caught it. I've been feeling it for 2 days but I'm sure it's been lingering in my system for a while. I honestly thought I'd get away without getting sick but nope woke up feeling like someone beat the s*** out of me and I just knew my day was here. It's just hard to stay in light clothes I'm freezing and want to stay covered up. Plus I'm getting the smokers cough it's driving me nuts
  • Are you running a fever?
  • Yes i took a warm bath it went away for a While but it's back my eyes are really watery nd I have this cough. One of my ears hurt kinda like a toothache but I can't tell if it's my ear or teeth....I've never had an earache but hubby says it may be an ear infection.... just took another tylenol so I'm hoping it'll help a little
  • Some obs/mws will not prescribe tamiflu...Some will. There are risks associated with taking them of course just like any drug.
  • I feel for you! I am just getting over the flu. My Dr prescribed tamiflu. He explained the risks vs benefits and thought that the benefits were greater with my high risk pregnancy. I agreed and feel much better 4 days later. Hope you are on the mend very soon!
  • This is my rainbow baby times two...so I'm kinda freaking out Monday seems so far away...googling was not a good idea
  • I am just getting over the flu and bronchitis. I ended up in the hospital for dehydration and rapid heart rate (it was hanging around 166). I was told to take tylenol and a zpack. Nothing really helped aside from time. It has been about two weeks and I am just now feeling better but with a lingering nasty cough.

  • Tell me about it! I saw the dr today and he basically said nothing will help. Tamiflu would've only been affective 48 hours into having symptoms....my head still aches and the cough I have is nasty too but no fever anymore thank god. I'm definitely drinking tons of fluids though! ;)
  • I had the flu almost 2 weeks ago and it began with vomiting. Ended up in the ER after 24 hours of not being able to even keep down water and was dehydrated. They swabbed and it was type a so for tamiflu. My husband got it 2 days later and my 4 year old the day after. It's been miserable. We are 10 days out and still coughing and sneezing. It's a slow process! I'm taking a 10 day dose of tamiflu to make sure it doesn't creep back. They also gave me zofran to help keep meds down. Prayers you feel better!

  • Did you guys get vaccinated?. I am not looking to start a fight on the vaccine. I am just curious, because I am hearing the vaccine was only 40% effective this year. I am wondering if that is true.
  • No, but it has been on my to-do list for awhile. This was the first time since 2010 that I haven't and I got the flu (didn't get sick 2010-2013). The ER drilled me for not getting it yet. They said that while it has been proven to not be as effective as prior years that it still lessens the severity and duration. As soon as I am 100% again I am getting the shot.

  • Woke up this morning throwing up and feeling dizzy. Hope its not the flu!!! Completely jinxed myself bc I just asked my boss if I could roll over my sick days for my maternity leave since I have not been sick all year....trying to fight through it and work. I got the flu shot a few months ago but I went to a play this weekend and there were a bunch of people coughing.

I'm sorry, but going to work throwing up and dizzy when you think it could be the flu is pretty irresponsible. Time to rest and relax at home and keep your germs to yourself!
  • We all got the flu shot and still got it. This is a rare what where the virus mutated so the shot isn't as effective but is supposed to help with symptoms.

That is what I have been hearing. The vaccine has not prevented the flu in all cases, but has lesson the symptoms. I hope it at least lessons the fatality rate.

Threw up once. Wasn't sure if I was sick or if it was something I ate. Plus sometimes I throw up in the morning after brushing my teeth. Not coughing at all and I don't have a fever at all...anyways just got off the phone with my nurse and she said to take it easy bc I am probably just a little dehydrated and have low blood sugar...sooo now I'm going home.
  • Did you guys get vaccinated?. I am not looking to start a fight on the vaccine. I am just curious, because I am hearing the vaccine was only 40% effective this year. I am wondering if that is true.
I got vaccinated and still got the influenza. The string of flu that is going around is not the same string of flu that is in the vaccine. Therefore, the shot was worthless this year.
  • DD got the flu, despite the shot, but other than the fever and a cough, my 2 yr old seems to be acting completely normally.  My little sister (8yrs old) got it and was so sick she stayed in bed for 2 1/2 days.  She hadn't had the flu shot... so I'm pretty convinced it's helping.

My OB had me take DD to the Dr for a flu diagnosis and then immediately put me on Tamiflu.  So far so good, I'm on my 3rd day and still no symptoms.

  • Be careful ladies!! I got diagnosed with flu today and was very dehydrated. Due to the dehydration, my uterus was having small contractions but good now after IV of fluids. Drink up!!!!
  • Please do your research on Tamiflu. It isn't the "miracle drug" it was touted in 2009. Side effects abound with minimal to no benefit. Also, unfortunately yes...the flu shot was "off" this year and the most common strains were not included due to mutation. Still helpful in about 1/3rd of the cases. Rest, Tylenol, chicken soup etc are still the best remedies. Stay hydrated and feel better soon. Disclaimer: seek help from a medical professional you trust and knows your individual situation :)
