Name question... honest opinions welcome :)

Hi, all! I hope everyone had a very Merry Christmas!

So I had decided against this name a while back for fear of teasing, but I cannot seem to find another one I like as much. Olivia May with last initial of G. Yep, her initials would be OMG. My husband thinks it may not be as popular by the time she's old enough for kids to figure it out.

I'm not in a big hurry to decide the name by any means, but I'd like to get this name out of my head so I can fall in love with others... if I decide against it, that is.

Thank you for your opinions... normally I wouldn't ask others what they think about a name if I loved it, but I guess I'm just curious about popular opinion on this one!

Re: Name question... honest opinions welcome :)

  • If you truly love the name, I wouldn't worry about the initials.  Of course, I'm talking out of both sides of my mouth because my husband and I just said no to a name because it would have made DD's initials EEL.  But I think if I had truly loved the first name enough, I would have talked myself into it.
On the other side, if you have to convince yourself that it's an okay name to have, then maybe it really isn't the right name.  Not a very helpful reply, I know, but I guess I'm trying to say that it just depends on how much you love Olivia.  If that is the name you envision for your daughter, then do it. Are you more flexible for the middle name?  Olivia Renee?  Olivia Faye?

  • Thanks for the feedback :)  I was the first granddaughter on my dad's side and was given my grandmother's middle name of May.  She is so very important to me, so I'd like my daughter (the first granddaughter in my family) to have her middle name as well.  Definitely more flexible with the first name than the middle name.
  • I love it, or maybe Olivia Jaye :)

  • Her monogram would be OGM, if that makes you feel better. I wouldn't change it if I loved the name.

Like everyone else said OMG will probably not be a thing in her time.
  • Not a big deal, in my opinion.

  • I don't think kids really think about each other's initials. The only people who will think about it, are the people she tells. Name her the name that you love.
  • Honestly, I wouldn't worry about the OMG.

however, personally, I know 4 people who have named their daughters Olivia May/Mae.  It's a little to popular for my taste, but if you love the name, go for it.

That is my other hesitation- popularity.  According to the 2013 name polls it's up there, but between MH and I, we only know one other Olivia who is a child, and she's in 3rd grade.  Maybe I'll wait until the 2014 polls come out and see if it's still towards the top.
  • It wouldn't bother me. How many times do people really look at someone's innitials anyways?

  • You clearly love the name and I love the mn tradition in your family with May. It is meaningful and something that holds a common bond within a family. Olivia is beautiful and classy but way too popular imo. If you love Olivia, name your DD Olivia! The initials should not really be a concern... nobody ever really thinks about another's initials..especially bratty kids who like to torment. I think it is a non issue.

  • I wouldn't worry about her initials. You don't really use you full initials all that often. Even in a monogram the G would be in the middle.

  • I agree with PP's. The name is nice, you shouldn't worry about the OMG. Unless the initials are A.S.S. I don't think people notice. Kids will definetly not care. :)
  • My sister born October 30th has the initials BAT- she thinks it's kinda cool
  • Agree that initials OMG are not a big deal and won't be a "thing" anymore. And I can't even think of an occasion you use all three initials except in a monogram, which is rearranged anyway. Olivia May is a beautiful name.

  • My son will have the initials BJS. I love the first name Benjamin and the middle name is James for my dad. Not much I can do about the last name. Don't worry about initials. Nobody even really says OMG anymore...
  • OMG is not likely to be a thing when she's older... and I don't think the initials would be a big deal anyway. I'd say, if you love that name, go for that. Olivia May is a beautiful name, IMO.
  • How often do you use initials? Like...10 times in your lifetime. I wouldn't worry about it, honestly.

Now you know I love a monogram... So if she ever used her initials it would be in a monogram as oGm. No biggie! I love the name!!

Eta: my great grandfather's initials were ASS! Haha! He ended up switching his name around to SAS!

  • I think that's a very pretty name & wouldn't worry about any teasing. It isn't very often that kids know middle names, let alone put together the initials. I say go with it!
  • I don't think the initials are a big deal. If you love the name Olivia and May is important to you, I would just do it!

Ps: I'm naming my daughter Olivia Joyce! I know it's popular and has been in the top ten girl names for years, but as a kindergarten teacher I have actually never taught an Olivia before. Maybe I will teach some by the time my daughter is in kindergarten, but it's funny to me which names are super popular on the chart but aren't as popular in my area.

  • Thanks again, everyone!  I definitely feel confident keeping the name Olivia on the list :)  I'm probably going to be one of those moms who doesn't decide for sure until the hospital!  Once I have her in my arms, a particular name will just feel right.
  • I like it, I wouldn't care too much about the initials!

    ******STUCK IN THE BOX************

Thank you for the suggestion.  I had thought of that, but I would want May to be the first middle name, which is what most go with for initial purposes?  (I think?)  After talking more with MH last night, he said, "You're over-thinking it."  Story of my life because I do that more often than I care to admit! ;)
  • I don't think it will be that big of a deal by the time she is old enough. A beautiful name, no matter the initials.

I grew up with the initials BEG. You would think I was teased a lot, but no. I also dated a boy in hs with the initials BJS. Again, never made fun of. Guess it wasn't a big deal where I grew up.

All that to say, if you really like a name, stick with it!

I agree, stick with the name and who cares about the initials, my brothers initials we're DAMN and no one teased him about it!
  • Atleast the initials aren't SLT, with kids saying you're a SLUT in the making, just missing the "U"! Kids are harsh
  • If you love it, use it. And besides most females have their monogram oGm anyways.
