When to increase formula and funny noise

DS is 4 weeks old/7 lbs 12 oz...he is rocking 2.5 oz every 3-4 hours and seems content. How will we know when we need to increase the amount we give him? Today we tried 3 and he was fine...but seems like he eats whatever we give him. I don't want to overfeeding...

Second...when he is sleeping he will make a high pitched noise on occasion. Last night it felt like every few minutes. Almost like he is trying to take in a bunch of air...only does it when he is lying down and makes a similar noise when he eats. I looked up sleep apnea/reflux...but I can't get an audio of a similar noise. Any idea on if this is normal...

Re: When to increase formula and funny noise

  • I increased formula for DD when she continued to show hunger cues after eating consitently after feedings.  She currently is getting 4 oz bottles and most of the time she finishes it, every once  in a while she won't eat all 4 oz.  and other times we will make an additional oz. because she still shows hunger cues.

To make sure she doesn't over eat, we pull the bottle out every few minutes to help pace her from eating too fast.  We also go wipe her chin off because she is a messy eater and it also gives her a minute to finish and allows us to check for hunger cues.  We also burp around half way through.

  • DD is 5.5 weeks old & we just bumped her up from 3 to 4 ounces about a week ago. She eats 4 oz every 3-4 hours during the day & goes for a 7 hour stretch at night. We also look for hunger cues. I think 4 oz per feeding is appropriate at this age. Sorry, I have no idea on the noise! I know a lot of babies make strange noises while they sleep so it might be nothing :)

  • No idea on the formula, but is the noise kind of like a squeak? LO makes a squeaky noise when he eats sometimes that sounds similar to what you've described. If it's the same then it's totally normal.
  • I just watch for hunger cues and had to go to 4 ozs about 2 1/2 weeks ago because he began to cry after he finished his bottle and try to eat his fingers. - he's very dramatic lol :D He is 5 1/2 weeks old.

As for the noise in his sleep- mine makes all kinds of crazy noises in his sleep. He squeaks, grunts and squeals. At first it was alarming but now I am cracking up and learning to sleep through them. Hope that helped a little!!
  • LO is 6w4d and he eats 3-4oz every 2.5-3hrs. Sometimes he will eat 4-6oz if it's been longer than 3hrs. Sometimes he will only eat 2oz. Average is 4oz.

  • Out pediatrician said the noise is a normal response while learning to breathe. CO2 builds up and then the baby's brain reminds them to breathe. Scary noise...but have to trust my doctor.

As far as feeding...still confused, but we are going to try 3oz every 3-4 hours and see how that goes. He doesn't give great hunger cues to begin with!
  • A good rule is just to make sure they are getting at least the equivalent of an ounce per hour over the span of the day. If LO went 3 hours give 3 ounces, 2 hours - 2 ounces and etc. If it's not filling LO up/ not enough after that they will let you know, no need to give extra just because of their age.
