2nd Trimester

39 years old, 17 weeks, positive blood test results for chance of downs, amnio in the morning.

Hey ladies, I just got a call from the results of my second trimester blood test. I tested postive for a chance of down syndrome, 1 in 85. I am scheduled tomorrow for an amniocentesis in the morning. I am really upset about these results, a normal range for a woman my age would be 1 in 200, so my results seem really scary. I am also scared of the amnio. I would appreciate any advice at this point, I really don't know what to think, feel or expect.

  • I have not gone through this, but I hope everything goes well. Odds are still in your favor and hope the amino goes smoothly and your baby is healthy. I am not yet familiar with false positives on 2nd trimester screen but know my NT produced many. Plz keep in my doctors are wrong all the time. Blessings to you and baby.

  • I hear you get results back fairly quickly with amniocentesis. Our doctor recommended the Harmony blood work first. It's a ten day wait of toture. Wishing you all the best.
  • I'm sorry you are going through this. Thoughts and prayers everything comes back normal.
  • I'm sorry you are going through this. I was given an 88% chance that my daughter would have severe chromosome abnormalities. We went through lots of testing including the amnio. It really wasn't a difficult procedure and took very little time, but the thought of hearing bad news made it really scary. Our daughter did pass all tests and is a healthy one year old.

My advice would be to hope for the best and try not to Google too much.
  • Thanks for the support and positive feedback ladies. I'm pretty freaked out but just trying to stay calm and hope for the best.

I know that is an alarming thing to hear but like pp said the odds are definitely in your favor. Take care of yourself and keep us posted. I'll be thinking about you, your SO and LO. [-O<
  • I'm sorry you are going through this. Remember that 1 in 85 is a little over 1%. That means there is a 99% chance that your baby will be completely healthy.
  • So I didn't have to get an amnio, I qualified for the NIPT blood test. I do feel better with the big chance everything is fine, but waiting 10 days to know for sure is rough. Thanks ladies for the support.
  • So happy to hear everything is alright!
  • Congrats!! I can sympathize for sure! I'm currently waiting for Harmony results. I'm so happy for you!!

I'm 28 and expecting my 3rd child. Our NT scan was perfect and I'm not AMA, but our bloodwork came back with 1:30 odds for downs. We did the materni21 test and it came back normal.

Try not to worry too much, if I had it to do over, I wouldn't do the genetic testing.

    Thoughts and prayers!

ETA: I didn't read that you've got results already! Glad to hear!
