Intro and Question

Hi ladies,
I'm a fairly active N14er - I mobile bump, so don't really explore past my own birth month board...but am excited to be here! LO (our first) is currently 6 weeks and we are EBF pretty successfully.

My question is about bottle feeding in preparation for going back to work in 6 more weeks. We have been trying to get her to take a bottle for the past three weeks and have tried the following brands/nipples:
Avent - slow flow
Medela - Calma nipple
Playtex - naturalatch
Dr Brown's - slow flow
Tommy Tippee - slow flow

DH is doing the feedings and is using the paced method.

We have had a little success (she has eaten 3 ounces on three occasions) with the Playtex and Dr Brown's, but LO will not take the bottle at all when I am at home. I have heard of this before; but is this something she will outgrow? Any tips to get her more accepting/ comfortable with the bottle? Or do I just resign myself to the fact that if I'm around, she'll just want to nurse?

Thanks!

Re: Intro and Question

  • My LO won't take a bottle if I'm around either and she is 6months old. We had a rocky week about 3 weeks I to day care but now she takes bottles fine with any caregiver.... As long as I'm not home. Try having someone else give the bottle occasionally and take advantage to have some you time and get out of the house. That great that you've already found 2 bottles she'll take. Sounds like you're in the right track. You still have 6 weeks so don't freak out if she doesn't want to take a bottle every day.

  • I would decide on one brand that is working, and consistently give her one bottle a day (or at least every other day) to keep her accepting it.  This will also give you a chance to start building up your frozen supply.  For example, you could pump 3 oz and let DH feed 2, and bank the extra ounce.  She may need to nurse sooner, but if your are EBF on demand it really wouldn't matter.  Over time, your LO may be willing to take a bottle when you are around (and even from you at some point down the road) but that isn't going to happen now.  I found that once LO was in DC and consistently receiving bottles she would even take one from me on the weekend if I found ourselves in a place where I wasn't comfortable NIP.  Right now, nursing is her world, and it will take her awhile to realize the bottle will also satisfy her hunger.  But, momma is always better!

  • All babies are different and yours might just want to nurse if you're around.  My little guy took a bottle like a champ until 11 weeks and then decided to boycott the thing until 5.5 months. We tried different bottles, nipples, cups, feeding methods and none of them worked.  When it came down to it and I had to go back to work, he took the bottle.  The first day wasn't easy but the next was much much better.  Pick a bottle that you've had most success with, have DH try feeding her daily and don't stress if it doesn't go smoothly.  She will eventually get it.  GL!!
  • DD is 6 months old and I haven't been able.to successfully give her a bottle. I haven't tried recently but honestly it's more because nursing to easier and pumping has become my worst enemy lol

  • I've heard trying to wrap a shirt you've worn (or something with your smell) around the bottle helps. I've never tried it myself but worth a shot. Good luck!

I give this bit of advice because it is the only way DS will take his bottles. Just before you stick the nipple in his mouth, run it under warm water. I have no idea why he is such a diva about this, but to this day if daycare doesn't do it he will reject the bottle. My kid is strange that way (he's 11 months old).
