havent felt baby move

I normally feel my baby kick at night when im getting ready for bed. I havent felt my baby kick or move since the night of the 22. Im not bleeding, and theres no pain in my stomach. Its the 24-so I cant call my doctor to get my daughters heartbeat checked.
Im 23 weeks and 4 days. This is my first child. What should I do?

  • They arent in until the 5. I tried calling already.
  • I'm sorry but there is no way that your office is closed until January 5 without any way to contact them.  That is crazy.  There should always be someone on call to answer questions no matter what day of the year it is.

I honestly don't think you have much to worry about because you're still not far along to be feeling consistent movement but you need to call your OB and speak with someone if you are concerned.  No one on here is going to be able to help you.
  • I personally think 23 weeks is a little early to feel consistent movement. Baby could be facing your back, or your placenta. And I agree with PP that it is completely ridiculous there would be no way to reach anyone in the obgyn department. Theres gotta be a way, try harder. Theres way too much risk for them to leave their clients for over a week with no contact.
  • Can you pop into the emergency room and have them just check? I live in a small town so our ER is often treated like a clinic since there is no where else to go or call after business hours. Not sure what your hospital is like...
  • I know it has been said by all previous commentators but, if you are worried, find a way to contact your doctor or find a doctor who is reachable (I would be very concerned about your doctor being unreachable- what if it was a few months from now and you are in labor).  Even going to your local ER or local labor and delivery unit is an option.

  • Hmm... I really don't think going to the ER is appropriate reaction to not feeling the baby move. Especially given how early you are. I absolutely understand how worrisome this is, but the ER is for genuine emergencies. I really think your OB must have a 24 hr nurse line or voicemail return... Covering OB maybe?

It definitely depends what kind of town/city you live in. The nearest OB to me is an hour away in another town so that's not even a realistic option. All the health care providers are either GPs or nurse practitioners who refer you to the ER after hours on their phone messages. Our area is so small they actually close the OR 4 weeks of the year so they won't even accept women in labour... They send you in an ambulance to the next town (an hour away). This is very different from when I lived in the city (where an ER is a real ER) but it is what it is.
  • I've read that some dont feel consistent regular movement unil 25 weeks. I wouldn't go to the ER, I would find a way to contact your OB. Heck, call someone else's OB and just ask if you are this worried.

  • I was freaking out last night because I realized I hadnt felt my baby move for a while. I could feel him in there, but he was still. I was just about to be panicked enough to goto the er, but after some prodding he woke up and started moving alot. He has been hanging out alot higher than usual. I have been feeling regular movement all day today...that feeling of panic is horrible. If you have felt the baby move on the outside yet, I would suggest trying to poke around to see if you can get some movement. I think after a while you can just get used to the baby moving and not really notice it.
  • Try not to stress too much, this is my first as well and I always get super nervous when I haven't felt any flutters recently. Usually my little pea will than keep my up all night with his mad dance skills!! Also call your OB one canobe and leave a message if no answer, they're usually great about returning calls.
