would you risk it?

My brother in law is hosting xmas this year at his house. His gf just posted in fb that she's been in the er monday and tuesday with her little girl who had a 104.1 fever. Doctor put her on antibiotics and steroids. She plans to be at the christmas get together. Would you keep lo at home or go since its been 24 hours since the antibiotic??

  • Yeah, I would keep LO far away from that. Although I am known for being a Paranoid Penelope.
  • I'd stay home too.

  • I'd stay home seriously. You don't want your newborn to develop something worse than what that little girl has such as RSV. I'm also not a paranoid person and would go if the girl had been on antibiotics for a week now because she probably wouldn't be contagious anymore, but that's not the case. Hey I would just cuddle with your LO and enjoy Christmas.

  • My thought process goes like this, correct me if I'm wrong....

Antibiotics means it's an infection. You can't cure a virus with antibiotics. Infections are rarely/ ever (?) airborne.

That being said, as long as you use good hand washing your baby should be fine.
  • Nope, we wouldn't go. Antibiotics are for bacterial infections, not viral ones (colds, flu, RSV). The GF should keep her kiddo home to avoid sharing with relatives, imo.

Except that what if someone else doesn't use good hand washing? Or the little girl somehow touches the baby?

    Still not worth it.
Also, doctors have a tendency to prescribe antibiotics no matter what. I've been offered Tamiflu for a kidney infection (?) and antibiotics "just in case" nearly every other time I've gone in for anything other than a wellness visit. Maybe they're not like that everywhere :-/
Yes, to the bolded. Not all docs do, but a lot give abx because the parents are persistent. Also generally from my experience, most fevers that high are commonly associated with being a virus -- the exception being pneumonia. With it being flu season and a fever that high I would definitely NOT risk it.

*Yes I'm aware there are other infections that cause high fevers. My reply is based off my job (urgent care) and the typical Peds patients we see.

  • We are going. Apparently the antibiotic helped as the little girl has been fever free for at least 48 hrs by rhe time we go. Our family physician said lots of hand washing by people who hold her and she should be fine. I will carry hand sanitizer the whole time andno kids will be holding her. H wants to go off what the doctor says so I feel like I have to respect his wishes and go. The girl did test neg for flu and strep so maybe viral? But antobiotic got rid of the fever so who knows. We will be ok. I've got to believe that and know that regardless of w hat precautions I take, there are some things that are just out of my control.

  • I think as long as people wash their hands and don't get up in her face (breathing on her) you should be fine. If you have a wrap or carrier I would just wear her the whole time. I do that for church and almost everywhere I go now out in public for my little girl. People usually want to avoid getting up to close because then they're invading my personal space and hers. Oh, and then there are no worries about everyone wanting to hold her or getting passed to someone I don't want her to be near to (like the other little girl). I hope, no matter what, everything works out! Don't worry too much, I bet she'll be perfectly fine. Just keep an eye on her and maybe run some temperature checks just to be sure if your still worried after.
