Matt Damon's character on 30 Rock was named Carol! I, like you, would not be brave enough to use it on a boy. My dad used to sing Boy Named Sue to my brother and me as kids, kind of makes me think of that (in case you've never had the pleasure) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Gbtm-93oqE
I would spell it Caroll-- like Caroll O'Connor-- if you use it for a boy. I think that might make this more familiar as a masculine name, at least to a slightly older crowd.

I know 2 actually, I think it's a fairly common Polish boys name. He may take some crap for it in the US, but that happens with soooo many ethnic names (poor Jesus Gonzalez) I wouldn't rule it out for that reason alone.
I always think first of Caroll Shelby (of Shelby Mustang fame), and now I also think of Carol from Walking Dead, so it works as male or female to me, I'm just not a fan of it.
Depending on where in the world he lives (think of his future) he may have a very hard time with Carol, Carolus or Caroll as a first name. Might not be the best idea. Then if he marries a lady named Carol...

I think we should be more concerned with little girls named Ryan, Avery, Emerson, etc marrying someone with the same name! Lol
