Rant: Maternity leave nightmare

Oh my goodness you guys. So I just went to my school (where I teach art) to drop off some progress notes and maybe say a quick hello. I went into my classroom and it looks like a tornado ripped through it: my furniture is all moved around, my supplies are everywhere in random piles, my art centers are dissembled and unusable, and there is paint on the rug, scribbles on all the whiteboards, and just overall it's disgusting. I asked the principal what happened, and she said that apparently the sub was having trouble keeping an eye on the kids while they worked in the centers, so she "rearranged" my room so he could "see them better." What the actual fuck?? I spent literally DAYS arranging my room, rearranging it for weeks to see what configuration worked best, etc. She even watched me do this, making comments like "oh, you're nesting" and "the room looks so beautiful!" And now my room looks like a pit and all I get is a shrug from te principal. Keep in mind, I've only been gone a measly 4 weeks!!! What's it gonna look like when I come back in February?!?!? I'm livid. There were also a lot of scheduling things going on behind my back right when I left, too, like they were waiting for me to go in order to try scheduling things that I kept telling them wouldn't work (example: sending a giant, out of control preK into my room all at once when they don't know how to use the centers because they've never been on there, instead of gradually in small groups so they could learn the space. Told them many times that they shouldn't do this, I leave and then they try it. Yeah - they found out the hard way that that would be a disaster). Ugh. I could go on but I'm giving myself a headache. I hope all you other teachers have better luck than me...looks like I have to go in early to try to fix it before my leave ends >:-( Pissed.

Re: Rant: Maternity leave nightmare

  • I'm so sorry! I was tempted to go in to visit my class today (half way through leave) but decided against it. I'm nervous about what it'll be like when I get back.

Any way the custodian or some of the older kids can help you rearrange when you get back?

  • I made that mistake too. My bookshelves are a mess and things are moved away from where they had been.  I was going to go fix the bookshelves  and some other things over Christmas break but DH pointed out that I would still be gone for 4 more weeks and it would be a mess all over again.  I will be going in the weekend before I go back to fix things back to my way.

I hope you are able to get things back in order and it won't be too big of a hassle.

  • I'm so sorry! Something similar happened to me when I was out for maternity leave with DS. I taught high school and came back to find the room totally trashed, rearranged, all kinds of crap on my desk and counters (like dirty dishes...gross), and the long-term sub had let the students totally walk all over her and allowed them to do ridiculous things. It was really hard to let it go. Try not to think about it and just focus on being home right now. Try to put it out of your mind until you have to go back so you don't stress about it constantly.

  • I'm so blessed that I have my former department chair who retired last year as my sub. However I am nervous about how many of my students she failed argh.
