Just wanted to get your opinions on what kind of pads you were all planning on using postpartum.

  • Another vote for Always Overnights.  Be sure to get some of the regular ones too, they're good to use once things start to slow down a bit (varies for everyone, but I think it's generally around 2w pp).

  • I used always also, they were amazing. Going to use them this time as well.

  • The always infinity pads are awesome. They're super thin (in comparison to reg pads) but work really well. I used them once I was home after having my first (I used the giant hospital ones while in the hospital...was only there for 1.5 days though).

  • FTM here- did anyone try the newborn diaper hack for pads? I saw some utube videos on making ice pack/pads out of newborn diapers. I was wondering if they were good on the absorbancy side of things.

  • I used the always overnights last time. This time im going to try the always underwear. My friend used depends for the early days and said they were amazing! I found that the pads starting chaffing and ended up getting cotton pads from whole foods.

  • Always Overnights for sure.
The regular Always Infinity pads are good once the flow slows down.

  • I don't know about pads, but I wish they sold the mesh hospital underwear because those are a MUST.

  • I wish this thread was posted a month ago. In the interest of getting shopping done before the holiday rush, I stood in the aisle with the pads for about 15 minutes trying to decide which one I would hate the least. I think I ended up with always overnight. I just didn't want anything that would feel plasticy. I can't stand pads in the first place.

  • I don't know, but I just realized I need to buy some underwear for post partum.  I pretty much only have thongs and those don't match massive pads all that well.

Ummm there's going to be heavy bleeding for two WEEKS after baby?? Jesus sometimes I wish I was just going into this blind... :(
    Sometimes it's longer.

I had heavy-ish bleeding for about 3 1/2 weeks pp, then another 3 weeks of lighter bleeding and spotting after that.

My hospital made these for me while I was there for the first 24 hours. They worked great! I mean I was changing it about every hour after I went to the bathroom but I didn't have any leaking problems with the diaper. I would use a diaper ice pack pad they made then would change into a regular Always overnight pad then back to a newborn diaper ice pack pad every couple hours.

I also had heavy bleeding for about 2 weeks and then I had light bleeding for a long time. My 6 week postpartum check up I was still bleeding a little. My OB extended my no working out and pelvic rest for another couple of weeks due to this.
  • Yup I was still bleeding at my 6 week appointment too. I needed to go back on the pill before it regulated again...

As for pads: Get the biggest ones you can find (at first).

  • Last time, I bled solidly for about 4 weeks. It didn't seem to slow down much. I also got my period back a couple weeks later.

As for pads, I also vote the biggest ones you can find. I've also heard not to get the ones with the gel core (I think) because it can pull on stitches. Can anyone confirm or deny?

Yeah, it really varies from person to person (and even from pregnancy to pregnancy).  With DS, I had heavy bleeding for about 10 days and was totally done by 4 weeks pp.  But I'd heard a lot of stories from friends and relatives about heavy bleeding for 4+ weeks, so I had a TON of the bigger pads that I wound up not using.

  • Wings or no wings?

I think I hated wings and ended up cutting them off of my pads.

I've always hated wings. Even during my period. But I don't think it matters too much.

  • I used Kotex natural overnight pads at first, then moved to Always overnight, then always Infinity. I still had light bleeding at my 6 week checkup, prob finished up by 8 weeks.

  • I seem to remember wearing two of those giant things at a time to make them longer and wider! I can't remember which brand or where I got them though so I'm not much help...
  • Good post ladies!!
  • I know overnights have large surface area, but does the thickness matter? I bought the overnight thins but I'm wondering if you guys mean larger as in span or larger as in the poofy ones are better?
  • The biggest effing pads i can find and i take extra mesh underwear from the hospital.

I don't really care for the poofy ones.  I used them in the hospital, but as soon as I got home I switched to thinner ones.  For me, it was more about surface area.  I didn't like the feeling that the thicker pads gave me, but that could also just be personal preference.

  • Glad this topic came up. Call it FTM ignorance but I had no idea bleeding would last for weeks. I was expecting a week maybe and more like a normal period. I definately wouldn't have been prepared!
  • @JMUgrad05‌ I didn't think I would bleed at all after my c section! No one told me until it was happening. I was really surprised, it lasted about 5 weeks

  • Thank you so much for asking this. I swear I stood in front of the shelf in this section, feeling completely overwhelmed for about 20 minutes and too embarrassed to ask anyone. I can't even remember what I bought, the one that loooked the thickest.

  • I had NO clue about this. Call me dumb, but I guess this is one of those things other mommies don't tell you, unless you ask. Yikes.

Last time I only used a handful of the always overnight pads then switched to something thinner. So for me the heavy flow only lasted a few days. The bleeding went on and on though.

  • My MW told me not to use Always brand post partum after my first two. I can't remember the reason why... I'll look in to it and come back.
  • I needed a lot more of the overnights with DS, as he was a vaginal delivery.

With DD, I had a CS, so I used the always ultra thin pads with wings for several weeks, but didn't bleed nearly as long after the CS when compared to my vaginal delivery.

  • Well damn... This has been informative. I mean obviously there would be bleeding after but I too didn't allow myself in my FTM ignorance to even fathom that I would need diapers myself.

New rule: dad's change all diapers until moms are no longer wearing them as well. I can't be over here changing E's AND mine every couple hours. Fuck that.

I told DH this new rule and he wanted to clarify that he would change all of BABY'S diapers, but that I needed to change my own.
  • Hahaha @twinklymama‌ hahaha yeah I don't want FI going anywhere near my whooha for a while. And at least you have evidence of him agreeing to do the baby diapers!

    image
  • My sister suggested getting depends to fit the big hospital pads into because they don't fit into normal undwrwear/ will keep your underwear from damage. DH is like really excited about this because he always jokes about me wearing depends because I'm older (by a year and a half aka nothing).
  • I'll put this in the ultimate postpartum thread as well, but I'm reading really great reviews on amazon about the Earth Mama Angel Baby New Mama Bottom Spray and balm. Basically, its a spray to use postpartum to help soothe the perineal area after vaginal delivery. I saw it at Buy Buy Baby (and on Amazon). I'm soooo getting this.
