I would love to join this check in. I haven't had time to write a birth story but D D was born 11/29.
Age: 3 WK 1 day Sleep- nights have been pretty good because she wakes every 2-3 hrs then will go right back to sleep after feeding. She is in the rock in play next to our bed. However last night she woke up at 10 and 10:30 and then stayed awake and urpped up 3 times which is unusual for her??? Daytime naps 3-4 for 15min-2hrs. 15 min if I put her down, 2 hrs if someone holds her and constantly pats/rocks her. Eat: BF well. Up to 8 pounds from 7.11 birth weight. Bf takes over 30 minutes a lot of times because she just seems to sucking to sooth Milestones: seems like she can see a further distance. Able to entertain herself looking around for~15 min. Lots of eye crossing. Questions. Do the other BF moms, unlatch their babies when nutritive sucking ends or do they let baby suck until they pull themselves off? Also any tricks to putting baby down for naps during the day? Instead of holding
@runnershan I swaddle her during the day when I really want her to sleep . it helps especially when others are holding her for naps and only way that she would sleep if I lay her down. I try and give her in swaddle time throughout the day to kick and punch. But I am not sure how much time in a swaddle is too much??
-She sleeps great at night, once she initially goes down. 2-4 (at most) hour stretches, just waking to eat for 10ish min and back to sleep. We are bed sharing. During the day, she tends to get overtired around 10 am and then at 9 or 10 pm. Witching hour...
-She's been awesome at BF, but I think she must be having some sort of digestive issues (what newborn doesn't I guess?). There are times when she can't stay latched because she's screaming and squirming. I burp, relatch, and repeat.. for a few hours. Her poops are dark yellow instead of bright, too. So hopefully my midwife can help us tomorrow.
-She had a giant pee smile this morning. Can't wait till it's real. She wears some of her 0-3 stuff now.
-Anyone think her fussiness during nursing seems like a growth spurt, or something else?
@runnershan prior to reading your response, I always thought she was full and thus just went to pacify sucking, I hadn't thought about the possibility that the milk stopped flowing. Tell me more about the thrush risk. Even though it can be hard on my nipples, I tend to let her pacify suck at the end because it puts her in s really deep sleep ( at least at night). I am still trying to figure out swaddle/underclothes and correct temperature. I go w a light footed PJ and light swaddle blanket during the day. @kfo22 I haven't gotten DD to fakk alseep in a wrap yet. What kind do you have? I was using the k'tan but I also have an ergo
@badrianne I have those too, just haven't used the ergo because I don't have the newborn insert. She gets really squished in the sideways kangaroo position, so I put her in straight up with her legs kinda froggy style tucked in against me.
Sleeping: Has done a 4.5 hour stretch these past two nights and then averages 2.5-3 hours after MOTN feeding. Naps mostly throughout the morning, more awake/alert in the afternoon, settles back down in the evening.
Eating: Used to average 3.5-4 hours between feedings now it's every 3 hours on the dot and he's eating the same amount (3oz) but he's eating it faster. Is this the beginning of a growth spurt?
Milestones: Starting to fixate on lights. Neck control seems to get stronger and stronger by the day! He also seems to be filling out the 0-3 month clothes a little bit more.
Questions: None this week.
Also, gripe water is no joke! Plus LO seems to really like it.
@runnershan - We swaddle every night for bed time and try to let him 'be free' during the day but if I notice he's exceptionally tired and having trouble napping from excessive stretching, then we will swaddle him up and he typically falls asleep fairly quickly after that.
RE: Baby Wearing - I have both the Ergo and the K'Tan. For me at least the Ergo = Adventures (outside/grocery store) whereas the K'Tan is for wandering around the house. I live in a colder climate and the infant insert for the Ergo keeps him sooo warm it's amazing for outside but not so much inside. Right now, the Ergo is my favorite because it's the easiest for me to put on by myself. The one time I was successful with the K'Tan it's because someone helped me put it on. I'm sure it'll get better and easier with time and practice. No real tricks for making him go to sleep once he's in there, just simply walking around seems to do the trick.
Eating: On-demand FF - Myles eats 3 oz bottles every 1.5-3.5 hours. The time between feelings really varies. Sometimes I worry we're over-feeding, but I keep reminding myself that we are just watching his cues.
Sleeping: he is mostly alert and awake in the morning and afternoon. He does what I call his long sleep from 4 PM - 7:30 or so. He is then awake for a while before we all go to bed around 9. At night he usually wakes up every 2-4 hours. None of this is scheduled or exact. Right now I'm just trying to look for patterns. He sleeps in the co-sleeper at the beginning of the night then usually the RNP or on me in the recliner by the morning.
Milestones: Myles is out of his newborn clothes and diapers. It happened almost overnight. Guessing he is now over 8 lbs. He was 6 11 at birth.
Questions: Do your babies like their swings? If so, what kind do you have? We have a hand-me-down from my sister (not sure the brand), and Myles hates it. I'm thinking about buying a different type.
This is my check-in... but I'm honestly so tired and out of it I can't think through what LO has or hasn't been doing, besides a lot of fussing and not much sleeping. I just try to go from one feeding to the next and hope I sleep at some point during the day. PPD has come back and hit hard this weekend. I hope I have more to report next week.
Hang in there! I hope you get some sleep, it may help with the ppd!
-Sleeping: a lot? She has a few periods of awake time each day, but those are mostly when she's feeding, or when she's screaming in the evening (oh witching hour!) She's just a good sleeper.
-Eating: I thought the growth spurt was over, but maybe not... Maybe it hasn't even started? Today she ate every hour from 4-9pm like clockwork.
-Milestones: she's started to make eye contact occasionally and has pretty good neck control!!
-Questions: there is one period of each day when she'll scream. It is the same period as her evening cluster feeds, but she can't possibly be hungry every second. Is this regular witching hour(s) or should I be investigating other causes, like reflux? She's content the rest of the day, so the screaming in the evening seems to have no reason.
-Working On: I want more awake time! When we cuddle, she often falls right asleep - she loves tummy time on me, but hates in on the playmat... Still working on that.
-Sleeping: no pattern. Sometimes 2-3 hour segments at night. We've had a few 5 hour segments after his 4am or so feeding. He's up more during the day. Only sleeps 1-2 hour intervals.
-Eating: like a boss. He's BF only but does drink breast milk from a bottle with daddy. He will overeat sometimes while soothing on the breast. He spits the milk up and coughs for 20 or so minutes. This has lead to our milestone...
-Milestones: we have unfortunately introduced the pacifier. In the beginning he could soothe on my breast with no issues but now, especially the right, depending on how long it has been between feedings won't stop flowing. I can literally pump 6 Oz without even trying and can get another 4 with massage. This is great for the freezer supply but nerve wracking during feedings because he literally just gulps it down.
-Questions: I don't want to lose my extra supply but what can I do about his gulping? Other than exclusive pumping? I don't think Having to use the shield at all feedings is helping either.
-Working On: Not getting too attached to the pacifier yet and ensuring there is no nipple confusion.
-AW: His smiles! He loves watching TV and the Christmas tree. And he loves kisses!
@runnershan we are trying the soothie also and so far no complications. The LC wanted us to wait until 6 weeks to be honest. I couldn't imagine that. Haha. So far we've only used it when he's still rooting but spitting everything back out. He still goes to sleep without it 90% of the time.
As for the block feeding idea, I have no idea what that is but will definitely search around for it. I'm up for anything that doesn't completely remove him from my breast.
I don't want to kick a gift horse in the mouth it's just frustrating when he's not satisfied on the left bc I only produce 2 to 3 ounces there but on the right he's almost drowning. I wish the boobies would just even out. Lol.
-Sleeping: she averages sleeping 90 minutes at a time every 2-3 hours. And only 10 hrs a day. Sometimes LO takes a longer nap during the day (2-3hrs) but never at night yet. And she will only sleep longer than 15minutes if she's being held. I've been sleeping on the couch holding her with a travel pillow around my neck!
-Eating: BF champ! she refuses to take any bottles or pacifiers we've tried.
-Milestones: she is much more alert and her neck is getting stronger during tummy time.
-Questions: DH helps me by holding her if she's napping, but if LO is awake she's absolutely inconsolable by him. I know it will get better, but I need his help with her and she won't let him! Anyone else experience this?
-Working On: sleeping in a bassinet or rock n play and for longer periods of time.
@vv101010 what has DH tried to soothe her? Maybe try skin to skin with her ear near his heart and have him walk with her or dance. Maybe while singing?
-Sleeping: I keep saying I don't want to jinx it, but my son has been a marvelous sleeper so far! With the terrible exception of last night (I had a 24-hour stomach bug yesterday, and it was nearly impossible to eat/stay hydrated without it all coming back up, so little man was up about every hour to nurse--probably because my milk production wasn't up to par!!!) my son has never once woken up by himself at night. I've been waking him every 2.5-4 hours overnights just to keep my supply up, but after he reaches about six weeks we will probably be down to just one night feeding!
-Eating: at first I was really concerned about his eating, as he weighed 6lbs 10oz at birth, and had dropped to 5lbs 14oz by day 4. But his doctor wasn't concerned and we breastfed like crazy! By 10 days old he had already surpassed his birth weight, and has been gaining about a pound a week ever since. I normally have him weighed on Tuesdays when I go to a breastfeeding group with a lactation consultant, so we won't be getting his weight today (I want to be sure I am well for Christmas!!!) but I'm thinking he had another growth spurt because his newborn sleepers probably won't last the rest of the week as he seemed to get too long for them overnight! I'm very excited to see what he weighs next week! My son is exclusively breastfed on demand and has been since birth. So, I really don't know exactly how much he eats, but at the breastfeeding group he gets weighed before and after eating, and they said he took in 4oz (when he was 2.5 weeks old!) so I'm not sure exactly if that's typical or just so happened to happen on that particular day/time. The longest we go without feeding is usually one 4 hour stretch at night, but the rest of the day he eats every 2-3 hours. I started pumping yesterday immediately after he ate, and was able to pump 3-4oz...today I was able to pulp just 2-3oz after he ate, but I'm also attributing that to dehydration from the stomach bug I had yesterday
-Milestones: LO is having longer stretches of awake time and is more alert when he is awake now! He is also gaining a lot of control of his neck and is focusing his eyes more :-)
-Questions: Who uses babyganics diapers? My son has been in them for about a week now, but as of last night, literally every diaper since then leaked through :-( I put the next size up on him, but I'm wondering if I will have to switch brands! LO has no bootie, so I'm thinking we need a brand with more elastic in the back???
-Working On: pumping! Started with the double electric pump yesterday and so far so good!
