Parenting book recommendations?

Has anyone read any parenting books they'd recommend or tell people to avoid?

For pregnancy books, I got the Mayo Clinic Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy (which I think is the print version of all those weekly updates The Bump sends to my phone, so I don't really find it useful) and Expecting Better by Emily Oster, which I loved, since she generally asks "why", but it's not the most comprehensive book.

Amazon suggests "What to Expect in the First Year" when I sort early parenting books by user rating, but I'm going to gamble on that being more Mayo Clinic format than Emily Oster awesomeness.  After that, the choices get pretty eclectic (and probably interesting).

Re: Parenting book recommendations?

  • I liked "A Girlfriend's Guide to Pregnancy" with my first. I also picked up the "Womanly Art of Breastfeeding". Both have since been passed around to friends and sisters... I don't have them anymore.

  • "Happiest Baby on the Block"- it was a life saver, I can't recommend it enough. It explains all the weird reasons why your baby cries and what to do about it- white noise (most babies hate quiet which I didn't know), tight swaddling, bouncing etc. It really did make a huge difference for my daughters first 3 months (known in the book as he 4th trimester).
  • Thanks for the advice!  I hadn't thought of getting a DVD, but it will be much easier to get my husband to pay attention to that instead of reading a book.

  • A coworker gave me the book Heading Home with Your Newborn. She said she had gotten it after her baby was born, but wished she had read it in advanced. It is written by two moms who are also pediatricians. I really liked it and would recommend it.
  • Attachment Parenting by Dr. Sears.

If you're going to nurse, this is a must have.  IMO, the best breastfeeding book I've ever owned.
PPD/PPA Mom...it has been super hard, but I'm making it! Slow steps...
Mom to Carter (6), and Calianne (1).
Proud VBAC, natural birth, breastfeeding, cloth diapering momma!

  • FTM so I'm only sharing what friends have loved, but "Baby Wise: Giving your infant the gift of sleep" was highly recommended to me. I picked it up but haven't read it yet. Also "The Happiest Baby on the Block" was recommended by several friends.

Probably doesn't pertain to most, but My therapist recommended "Parenting from the Inside" which deals with attachment theory and forming a safe attachment for your baby. For a lot of people this is instinctual so it might not be helpful. My husband came from an abusive family though where he never felt safe so this book has helped us understand what he went through as a child.
  • My friend passed on the 'secrets of the baby whisperer'- seems like common sense, kind and good for both parents and baby. And my friends kids both slept through the night early and had very mellow infancy. Hoping for the same!
  • YOU: raising Your Child by Dr. Roizen. I read a ton, and this is the book I have appreciated the most so far re: baby care.
