Parenting after a Loss

Toddler utensils?

So B's ped asked if she could use a spoon and I said no, because she just doesn't need one. She doesn't eat anything that would require a spoon. So......this is a really dumb question.....what do you feed your toddler to get them to use a spoon on their own? What age did you introduce utensils? Should I be trying a toddler fork with her? BTW she's 16 months and has ZERO teeth. I cut everything into chunks and there's pretty much nothing she can't shove in her mouth and chew with her gums.

TIA and please don't look down on me for stupid questions! lol

Re: Toddler utensils?

  • P is 18 months and has all of his teeth. We use the take and toss brand of forks/spoons. If we give them to him, he basically just chews on them (at least at the correct end lol). I'm interested to see what others say.
  • DS uses a spoon for yogurt, Apple sauce, oatmeal and soups (is it weird that he loves soup?!?!? - I make a lot of homemade soups). Daycare started giving him utensils around 1 year and he picked it up very quickly. I'm not saying he doesn't make a mess at times, but he does a pretty good job in my opinion.

  • So I guess a follow up questions would be....do you use a bowl? I feel like it would just get dumped on the floor! lol

The kid loves cottage cheese....double fists it into her mouth! Maybe I'll try giving her a spoon to help with that!

  • I have been eyeing the munchkin suction bowls to teach Tate. He is super strong, and might just rip it off, but I might try them. They have some at BRU. No questions are stupid among friends :P

  • We started with the suction cup bowls and plates. In the beginning it was helpful because he would push his fork/spoon against the edges. Now we just use regular bowls and plates.

  • DD is 11 months with no teeth so I understand your frustration there!

Because of her bad reflux we have had a dietician working with us for months now. She suggested just letting DD play with her spoon at first. So I'd give her one and she practiced putting it to her mouth. Usually she just puts it in her mouth and chews it but she does get food in there sometimes.

I take her hand and help her to scoop something onto the spoon and bring it to her mouth. Something like oatmeal works well for that.

I usually have to hold her bowl or it gets dumped but we've been practicing it and she will now reach into her bowl without picking it up and dumping it out.

So really it just takes practice and be prepared for some messiness!

  • You can get bowls that suction cup to the tray of the high chair. Isaac can use a spoon, he likes flavored yogurt. It's messy but he can do it, though after 2 or 3 spoonfuls he ditches the spoon and just starts dunking his hands and licking them off. I guess it just takes time. We haven't even tried a fork yet. Oy.
