Pregnant after 35

First time pregnancy paranoia..

I went for my first ultrasound and it has me completely confused. My calculation has me at 7 wks (1st day of last period was 10/29), but was told I am less and may need another 2- 3 weeks. I am freaked out cause I am wondering what could be wrong. I didn't really have the pregnancy symptoms at first except for the missed period, sore boobs and 2 seconds of nausea. Now they have stopped. Next doctor's appointment is not until mid jan. I am feeling a bit crazed right now....is it normal for the symptoms to just stop? How far off could my calculations be? ....

Re: First time pregnancy paranoia..

  • Did they see a heartbeat on the ultrasound? When you say you may need another 2-3 weeks does that mean they are putting you at 4 weeks? Perhaps you could ask for another ultrasound in the next few weeks to check the dating again (assuming your doctor is concerned) and see if there has been progress.

Keep in mind just because you had your period on a certain date doesn't mean you ovulated when you think (unless you used the test strips) and you could be off on your ovulation date which is what really matters not your lmp. Sorry you are dealing with this!

  • How far along did they say you are then? It's weird that they didn't say that as opposed to saying 2-3 weeks. If they didn't answer that, I think I might call and ask.

Unfortunately, in the beginning its a lot of waiting. It's hard. They saw me at 9 weeks. Then not again until 13 almost 14 weeks. I go again today but only because I switched docs to someone closer to my home and work. And I'm high risk because of a loss I had in 2011 at 20 weeks. But there isn't much they can do before 16 weeks so it's just a lot of waiting.

Good luck to you. I think I would call back and ask a few questions. ;)

The beginning is hard! I would definitely ask your doctors the questions you have: how far along am I? How did you determine that? When will I have another appointment? What will you check for then? Etc.

As for symptoms, they come and go, and the first few months can be blissfully symptom-free or can be really hard. Nausea tends to hit in the second month, but you may never get it for more than a few seconds at a time.

Arm yourself with patience and make sure to eat as healthfully as you can, take a prenatal with folic acid, stay hydrated, and get lots of rest and exercise while you can. Beyond that, it's out of your control.  It does get easier with time, but the whole pregnancy is wrought with worry of one sort or another. I find it helpful to remind myself that there's no point in getting stressed out over things I have absolutely no control over.
  • I didn't actually have symptoms until around 9 weeks, so don't put too much weight on that.  Unless you went through IF treatment, it's pretty common to not ovulate when you think you did.  I'll keep my FX'ed for you for a sticky baby though!

  • Hoping that you just ovulated late. Did they draw a HCG level? I would want to make sure that your # are doubling as expected in the short term. Hang in there, waiting is hard.

  • I agree with PPs that you may have ovulated late. I know I did. I will probably be listed as 10 weeks when I go for my appt until the u/s. Then I expect to be moved down to 9 weeks. Also, I didn't have nausea until 7weeks and it has been very mild. Good luck!

  • Thank u all. I have been trying to stay positive but my mind wonders sometimes. I spoke to my doctor and he pretty much said the same thing you all did. He was not in his office so he doesn't have the report. Its a wait and see situation to see what my body does (and boy have I been having conversations with myself). Good news thus far is that there is no spotting and because i had just come off the pill and was not tracking ovulation, its hard to really tell my ovulation cycle. Bad news is that it could be a pregnancy that just stopped developing. Again it is just a wait and see situation. So i going to do my best to stay sane and wait, but in the mean time I am going to schedule another ultrasound for next week.
As for the symptoms, no return yet...fingers crossed but not sure if thats a good or bad thing yet. ..
    Thanks again ladies...
