When do you feed baby in relation to sleeping?

I know the eat, play sleep schedule is popular. I am not really a type A "schedules" person, but I am starting to think it would be good to try to get him in a little more of a routine. It's hard because his feedings are sometimes still only an hour and a half apart because he is a very short napper. What do you do at this point with your LO? Daycare seems to feed him a bottle before each nap, so I am thinking of trying to keep that consistent at home too with BF. Does anyone else do an eat sleep play schedule?

Re: When do you feed baby in relation to sleeping?

  • That's what we do most of the time. He eats best when he's sleepy, and will fall asleep after nursing a lot. Then when he wakes up he is ready to play

His first morning feed he may or may not go back to sleep, and there are other times where he won't go to sleep after nursing. Then sometimes he'll nurse after he wakes up, but that isn't as common. As long as he eats and sleeps I'm not picky with the order!

  • A lot of times we do eat, play, nap, play. He almost never goes to sleep right after eating. But he has also spaced out his feedings to every 2.5 -3 hrs and so will rarely sleep all the way until he is ready to eat again.
  • DS likes falling asleep at the breast so we do eat sleep play most of the time here. Also he takes way longer naps in my arms than otherwise so I often hold him. I love the cuddles too.
  • FF here but our routine goes eat, play until the hour of when she started bottle has passed (starts at 7, finishes at 730, so 8 would be that magical number I'm referring to) nap for usually an hour, play for an hour, eat and the process repeats.

Bedtime is just eat then sleep.

  • We always eat before sleeping. He doesn't always fall asleep at the breast but he sleeps better on a full tummy. Now, he does go 3 hours between feedings and we have no real schedule. Not even at daycare. They don't try to put them on a schedule until 5mos.
  • I usually feed before sleep, except the first wake up and nap. She's ready to eat right away in the morning.
  • I'm not super strict on a routine/schedule. Generally, we are eat play sleep. Except for bedtime, I keep offering until she refuses.

With DS, he was eat play eat sleep.

  • Eat, play, sleep, until the last feed of the night when it's nursing right before bed. He'll fall nearly asleep that way, and I transfer him to crib.

Eat, play, sleep. Except after her last nap when it's eat, play, eat, sleep. Generally, I'll nurse her just before we get ready to put her down for the night.

Our routine is pretty varies based on naps.

Always eats 1st thing in the morning.  If she's home with me (weekends), I can usually get her to nap again almost always at 2 hours after she's been awake.  She usually eats again at 3-4 hours from her last bottle & naps (length/duration) are still all over the board- especially at daycare.  We always do bottle right before bed.
This is pretty much is too. Eat shortly after waking up. We/daycare try to get him down for a nap after about 1:15-1:30 of wake time and feeds are about 4 hrs apart. How everything lines up is a crap shoot based on nap length and how long it takes him to actually fall asleep. He always eats right before bed at night.

  • I try to follow eat play sleep because my LO has reflux and does better not going to bed on a full stomach. However, my only exception is at night she will only go to bed on the breast at night so I just put her on my chest for a while to digest :/ she BFs every 3.5-4 hours and takes 4 cat naps so I don't feed her every time she wakes
  • For naps it's eat play sleep bug if he wakes before the 3 hr time fir his next bottle we play then eat. Regardless he eats every 3 hrs.

    Nighttime we feed then sleep.
