Blood in milk

LO bit my nipple this weekend (9mo old). I didn't realize he had drawn blood until just a minute ago when I was pumping and noticed the milk from one side was pink. I looked and sure enough there is a small cut.

Should I give him the pumped milk? We nurse in the am and pm and I think that is ok but for some reason I wonder if I should throw out the pumped milk? And anything I can do to help it heal faster?

Re: Blood in milk

  • I know that if you leave the pumped milk in the fridge a day or two, the blood tends to settle to the bottom.  You can then pour the milk into another bottle to remove some of the blood (since a good portion will stay at the bottom).

  • It seems gross, but it's totally fine. Milk with some blood in it is totally safe. No need to remove any of it!
